Wild roses

January 3, 2017

So just the Rose Bowl we all expected. A USC team that lost to Stanford by 17 against a Penn State team that lost to Michigan by 39.

=

Well phooey, I was expecting the #RoseBowl to go at least into quadruple overtime.

If you’re going to miss two field goal attempts in the Rose Bowl, might as well make the last one. #USC

Happiest people in Vegas starting about half-time were those who bet the #RoseBowl “over”, which is 62. #Wedontneednostinkindefense #PennState #USC

Both USC and Penn State offenses in Rose Bowl looked like men against boys. #bustohell

Give Lane Kiffin credit, anyone can be fired from a losing team, how many people can get fired, or ask to leave early, on an undefeated team one game from the national championship.

A spokeswoman for Dick Clark Productions says allegations that Mariah Carey’s New Year’s Eve performance was intentionally sabotaged are “defamatory, outrageous and frankly absurd.”
She’s right; if they wanted to do any sabotage for ratings would have made more sense for a wardrobe malfunction.

In France, a new law mandates workers’ “right to disconnect.”  The law requires companies with more than 50 employees to establish hours when staff should not send or answer emails
At this point France may need to consider a wall to keep potential Americans immigrants out

Hadn’t heard of her but like her style: British singer Rebecca Ferguson will perform at Trump’s inauguration on one condition- that she can sing “Strange Fruit,”  a 1937 protest song.

Trump playing the skeptic re allegations against Russia, “I know a lot about hacking. And hacking is a very hard thing to prove. So it could be somebody else.”
Did Putin tell him to say that?

The House GOP defied chair Paul Ryan and quickly voted to gut the Office of Congressional Ethics tonight. Among other things the proposal would would bar the panel from reviewing any violation of criminal law by members of Congress, accept anonymous reports of Congressional wrongdoing, and make any public statements or hire any communications staff.
Right, because we shouldn’t disturb all those fragile new alligators in the swamp?

In Texas, a homeowner fatally shot a guest at a New Year’s Eve party. KHOU-TV reported that “the owner claimed that a fight erupted between him and the drunken man when he refused to leave, adding that he had no choice but to shoot.”
Your move, Florida.

T.C’s New Year’s thought  “Happy 2017 Everyone! I see that Donald will be writing his own Inaugural speech… and Mariah Carey will be proof reading it.”

Small mercies

January 2, 2017

On a positive note, #BettyWhite survived 2016!

And 49ers, Browns and Rams fans don’t have to suffer watching their teams anymore until Fall 2017.

A Texas state representative is recovering after being shot in the head by a stray bullet after a New Year’s Eve get-together at a home with friends and family. #GodBlessTexas #Ifonlyhewerearmed

The SF 49ers have fired Chip Kelly. Wonder who Jed York will now sign to a 3-year contract to be the team’s next interim coach?

A plane is towing a banner today in Santa Clara: “Levi’s Stadium – The House That Harbaugh Built.” Well, the team sucks but at least 49ers fans are still in good form.

Trent Baalke said his firing was “the right thing to do.” Well, for the first time in years the 49ers GM was correct.

Just as well #Browns lost, #49ers with #1 draft pick would be like dog actually catching a car – they wouldn’t know what to do with it

Wonder if Brett Favre is calling the Raiders, who’ve now lost two QBs to injury in two weeks, to say “I’m available.”

The NY Jets would like to thank both Bills and Mariah Carey for making sure that this weekend they weren’t the most embarrassing thing in New York.

The Bills gave up a touchdown today against the Jets on a NY kickoff, when both returners became confused and backed away from a live ball in the end zone….which they should have done if it were a PUNT. Well, it’s only week 17 so maybe a bit too early for players to really know the rules?

The Washington Redskins today fell out of the playoff picture. I’m confused, do we blame Trump or Obama?

If Dick Clark weren’t already dead, Mariah Carey’s performance last night might have killed him.

Mariah Carey apparently thinks her New Year’s Eve performance was sabotaged so ABC could get better ratings. Wow, that’s paranoid enough against the media that Mariah maybe really should be singing at the Inaugural.

Guess President-Elect Trump got the Jed York “Winning with class” memo? “Happy New Year to all, including to my many enemies and those who have fought me and lost so badly they just don’t know what to do. Love!”

 –

Donald Trump’s press secretary isn’t happy with the American public; “instead of trying to mock him or undermine him, it’s time that people started to give him credit for actually getting things done.”
Uh, but okay, Obama’s still President, Trump hasn’t actually gotten anything “done” yet.
But rest assured, the American people are ready on January 21, for better or worse.

And to end on a cheerful note:  Again, happy new year.  May your troubles last as long as your New Year’s resolutions

Happy New Year.

January 1, 2017

Not often as a Californian for nearly 40 yrs, I ever admit any East Coast supremacy. But they did make it to 2017 first.

Mariah Carey didn’t really melt down during New Year’s Eve Times Square show; she just wanted to send 2016 off in an appropriate way.

But really, #2017withMariah.  Was this supposed to make us feel less awful about 2016?

On a bright note for football fans up in Washington at least today’s loss didn’t come down to an inexplicable and heartbreakingly stupid play call by Pete Carroll.

And while Washington was widely anticipated not to be worthy of being in the same playoff game against Alabama lost, they didn’t even come close to the most embarrassing performance of the day.

But of course, nothing is  Urban Meyer’s fault.

49ers are reportedly going to fire both Chip Kelly and Trent Baalke, in theory to clean house. But kind of hard to clean a house that’s still on the same rotten foundation. #JedYork

Saw a complaint that President Obama has played 66 rounds of golf this year. How long until Americans start begging Trump to go play golf?

Just trying to imagine what GOP would be saying if a Democratic President-Elect was defending Russia against our intelligence services?

Really, are there any more surprises w/ @realDonaldTrump & Putin now?. Maybe some wonder what they’ll get each other for #ValentinesDay.

Reports are that Trump is considering corporate lawyer George Conway as solicitor general. While Conway has little of the usual government experience, he is married to Kellyanne Conway.
Is this another of those moments where we put down the novel or turn off the movie as too implausible?

The latest fake news on Obama is that he is anti-semitic. Given all that he’s been accused of amazed he’s been elected – twice.

President-elect Donald Trump ““If you have something really important, write it out and have it delivered by courier, the old fashioned way because I’ll tell you what, no computer is safe.”
Well he and his friends ought to know.

The 49ers voted the most Len Eshmont, for the most “inspirational and courageous” player in 2016, to Colin Kaepernick. Well, it’s not like anyone deserved it for actual play on the field.

Reports are that Trump is considering corporate lawyer George Conway as solicitor general. While Conway has little of the usual government experience, he is married to Kellyanne Conway.
Is this another of those moments where we put down the novel or turn off the movie as too implausible?

Really, are there any more surprises w/ @realDonaldTrump & Putin now?. Maybe some wonder what they’ll get each other for #ValentinesDay.

Treed off?

December 30, 2016

Stanford QB Keller Chryst injured his right knee in the 1st quarter of the Sun Bowl. And I am sure Christian McCaffrey both feels both very sorry and very vindicated.

And yes, Stanford survived by 2 against North Carolina. But can the Cardinal hire a special coach in future just for the fourth quarter?    #Toomanymeltdowns  #RoseBowl #FiestaBowl …..

Sarah Palin has called on Trump to leave the UN. And she’ll then do her part by keeping an eye on Russia from her house?

Bristol Palin wrote a blog post attacking “A-listers” who have refused to perform at Trump’s inaugural, and saying Hollywood is chock-full of “sissies.”
Is Bristol really just upset Trump hasn’t asked her to perform a dance?

After President Obama expelled 35 diplomats, Russia has vowed to retaliate. Wonder they are threatening – to interfere w/ our elections?

Donald Trump’s tweet on Putin’s decision not to respond with sanctions to Obama’s sanctions “Great move on delay (by V. Putin) – I always knew he was very smart!”
Or at least Putin can count the days until January 21?

In California, prosecutor dropped a DUI charge from last year against a man who tested positive for nothing more than caffeine. Based on experience with my friends and family members, the bigger danger is many people driving WITHOUT caffeine.

In a British plan to cut accidents on the road, new young drivers might be forced to spend 120 hours on the road with supervised practice before getting their licenses.
If they seriously want to cut accidents, how about a plan to have older drivers who are relatively new to smartphones also spend supervised time driving with their phone in the car?

A women singer from the Mormon Tabernacle Choir has resigned from the group saying that “Looking from the outside in, it will appear that Choir is endorsing tyranny and racism by singing for this man… and she “could never look myself in the mirror again with self-respect” if she performed at Trump’s inaugural.
Well, yeah, we all know those crazy liberal Mormons.
.

Horrible story for any parents. But a Texas couple is suing Apple after their daughter was killed in an accident they say was caused by a driver using the FaceTime app while driving.
Have to wonder, would they sue a gun manufacturer if she was killed by someone accidentally firing a gun?

Love-love-love

December 30, 2016

Okay, we all agree 2016 has sucked in a lot of ways. But in a year when “Loving” is a likely “Best Picture” nominee, nice to know the US has made some progress. Congrats to Serena Williams and Alexis Ohanian.

Robert Hulseman, 84, has died. He invented the Red Solo Cup. Not sure what they will be serving at his funeral, but we sure know in what they will be serving it. #cheers

Lin-Manuel Miranda, asked by a British interviewer about bringing Hamilton to London in 2018: “It’s a rap musical about the Founding Fathers of America -are you worried that the British won’t know much about the subject? “Can I tell you a dirty secret? Most Americans don’t know either.”

Carrie Fisher, who never got an Oscar nomination, “I’ve waited my entire life to get an award for something, anything. I now get awards all the time for being mentally ill. It”s better than being bad at being insane, right? How tragic would it be to be runner-up for Bipolar Woman of the Year?”. #oneofakind

Explanation for the younger generation about Debbie Reynolds: Once upon a time she was America’s Sweetheart, blonde, pretty and supposedly in a perfect marriage with another celebrity, Eddie Fisher. Except that he left her for a beautiful thrice-married exotic woman, a woman who would later leave him.
Yep, in short, Jennifer Aniston and Brangelina in the late 1950s. (Although Debbie and Eddie had two children, one of them  Carrie Fisher.)

Apparently @realDonaldTrump is writing his own inaugural speech. Presumably 140 characters at a time?

Trump on Russian hacking -“”I think that computers have complicated lives very greatly “The whole age of computer has made it where nobody knows exactly what is going on. And we have speed — we have a lot of other things, but I’m not sure we have the kind of security we need.”
Okay, fine, take out the word “computers” and substitute “guns.”

Are we done yet?

December 28, 2016

Open note to 2016. There’s still time, you could kill off an actual a**hole or two.

Cheery words to look forward to at the end of a tough year – “Pitchers and catchers report…”

Some fans are upset that some college football players have chosen to skip 2016 bowl games. Of course, do challenge the average fan at this point if they can REMEMBER any 2016 bowl games.

QBs often give their offensive lines Christmas gifts, and this year is no exception. Eagles rookie Carson Wentz.gave each of his linemen an engraved Beretta shotgun. Maybe to protect themselves from Philly fans? #whatcouldpossiblygowrong?

Men/women quotes of the year from the UK Times, following the break-up of Iggy Azalea and Nick Young:
Azalea on Instagram: “Unfortunately although I love Nick and have tried and tried to rebuild my trust in him, it’s become apparent in the last few weeks I am unable to. I genuinely wish Nick the best. It’s never easy to part ways with the person you planned your entire future with but futures can be rewritten and as of today mine is a blank page.”
Young on Twitter: “Single.”

History lesson for those who believe cinematic life began with Star Wars. Yes, Carrie Fisher was Princess Leia. But her father was Eddie Fisher, an incredibly popular pop singer in the early 1950s. Her mother, Debbie Reynolds, a 1950s film star. Both had their own TV shows. But their marriage broke up when Fisher had an affair with Reynolds’ good friend, who he later married, a woman named Elizabeth Taylor….
The breakup was also major news in the days BEFORE social media….. Amazing in some ways Carrie survived as long as she did.

Thousands of people signed a petition demanding a Hunter College professor be fired after his husband heckled Ivanka Trump on a JetBlue flight..
So to show that in this country we shouldn’t bother family members, we want to fire the heckler’s family member?

Trump Tower’s lobby was briefly evacuated this afternoon after reports of a suspicious package being discovered, though the package turned out to be harmless. Was it actual genuine tortillas mistakenly sent to Trump Grill for Taco Bowls?

Apparently President-Elect Trump wasn’t very happy with the interview with Obama said he would have won a third term. This tweet “President Obama campaigned hard (and personally) in the very important swing states, and lost. The voters wanted to MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!”
Okay, whatever you think of Trump, can you imagine his tweets if he had actually LOST? (or if we simply didn’t have the electoral college.)

Scary thought: @realDonaldTrump doesn’t drink. So he is sending all these tweets completely sober.

Words to live by

December 27, 2016

tinsel

You know 2016 has been a long year when you wake up and are just glad not to see yet another headline about somebody dying.  And DAMN IT CARRIE FISHER.

A Queen we could all bow with if not to… RIP. Tweet by Geraldine (@everywhereist):

And Carrie Fisher embraced her struggles and imperfections. She wasn’t simply Princess Leia – she was Queen of Not Giving a Fuck.

Perhaps for those of us who were children just before Star Wars, Carrie Fisher as Princess Leia was the Emma Peel for a generation. May the force be with her.

Another thing that sucks about 2016. It is bad enough to lose aging icons. It is worse to lose icons who are more or less your age.

The NBA now says that LeBron James’ dunk with 1:43 remaining in the Cavs-Warriors game should have resulted in a technical foul for “deliberately hanging on the rim” after the dunk was completed.
So what’s more surprising, that they admitted it at all, or that the league acknowledges a superstar should ever be called for anything?
What’s next, actual traveling violations?

Some fans chanted “We want Romo,” and “Tony, Tony, Tony,” during the 2nd half of last night’s Cowboys win in Arlington. Presumably the chants were from Lions fans?

In Santa Monica, a synagogue door was smeared with feces and food in an apparent antisemitic attack on the first night of Chanukah So is it a war on Chanukah now too?

Thinking for #Hanukkah really to become a major U.S. holiday we need to come up w/ one standard spelling. #Chanukah

Malls across the U.S. were evacuated due to after-Christmas brawls. Although while police were called there are no reports of serious injury. #Ifonlytheshopperswerearmed

That “special relationship” is going so well. Headline in London Times “Use Brexit to steal UK trade says Trump aide.” The story notes how “Wilbur Ross, the billionaire incoming commerce secretary” has called Brexit a “God-given opportunity.” for the U.K’s rivals, including the US.
Well, at least we have Russia…. Sigh.

An interesting side note from President Obama’s news conference about the election, and one I hope future Democratic nominees might heed. (I HATE HATE HATE the prevent defense.) :
“If you think you’re winning, then you have a tendency, just like in sports, maybe to play it safer.”

John McCain, showing signs of why he used to be every Democrat’s favorite Republican, on the alleged Russian hacking: “If they are able to undermine an election, they’re able to undermine democracy”
Of course to be fair, perhaps there is a bit of sour grapes that the election they didn’t hack was 2008?

Boxed out

December 26, 2016

Happy boxing day. To those who observe. And to those who don’t. Happy after-Christmas sale day.

So at the malls are the Valentine’s Day decorations up yet?

Steve Kerr last night after #Warriors loss to #Cavs – Curry “could make better decisions.” @NBA version of #Firstworldproblems

Defensive tackle Dontari Poe just threw a TD pass last night for the Chiefs.  No it’s not just that you’ve had too much eggnog. #DENvsKC

You know 2016 has been a long year when you wake up and are just glad not to see yet another headline about somebody dying.

Oops, Sarah Michelle Gellar tweeted out “Do u really want to hurt me? I guess you do 2016 – #ripboygeorge” Guess these 50 something English white boy rockers all look alike?

The Cavs’ Richard Jefferson got a technical foul yesterday for winking at the Warriors’ Kevin Durant yesterday. Winking?! Even the No Fun League thinks that might be overkill.

President Obama said if “I had run again” he would have beaten Trump. Alas “the devil you know” was not on the ballot.

Merry Christmas, on both sides of the pond….

December 25, 2016

Best wishes to Queen Elizabeth II, who has a bad cold and was unable to make the traditional Christmas morning service near her Sandringham estate, which gives locals a rare glimpse of their Queen. Alas there wasn’t time to call Elton John to substitute.

On a brighter note,  while  we’ve lost so many in 2016. But Keith Richards has announced he is just going to live forever.

The latest RIP is #GeorgeMichael. Never was a huge fan but so ready to be done with 2016. #toomanylosses

Six NBA games on Christmas. Well, at least it makes it easier for players, who don’t have to decide about spending the holiday with which mother of their children.

And the Spurs won. But in  his usual spirit, wonder how tempted Gregg Popovich was to give half his team the day off? #Bulls #Spurs #SpursXmas

Weird Christmas good news. Residents of city of Augsburg, near Munich, were able to return to their homes on Christmas night at 7p after being evacuated at 10a so experts could defuse a bomb.
Sign of the times we live in? Well, not exactly; the bomb was from World War II.

So now we are FINALLY done with the “last chance for Christmas” marketing emails.  The post-Christmas sales start tonight.

In all seriousness for a change, hope all my friends and readers have had a merry Christmas or whatever it is you celebrate. One of the things I most celebrate this year is friendship, and connecting with people of all kinds of different views. If you are reading this,  you probably agree with me on some things, and disagree on others. And you probably think sometimes that I am crazy.  But I value you all and am grateful you take the time to read and interact.

And oh yeah, happy humbug from Xena, aka the Voodoo Cat

Sleigh bells ring

December 24, 2016

Santa’s on his way. Let’s hope next year that a bearded guy from overseas with an announced plan to invade the houses of all Americans with children isn’t put on the no-fly list. #sleightohell

At a Jersey City Mall, apparently a wild brawl broke out between shoppers last night, with Santa and kids waiting to see him nearby. Police were called, although there are no reports on arrests. #Ifonlytheywerearmed

All these games with playoff implications today and Northern California gets 49ers vs Rams on TV. It’s enough to make you want to channel surf looking for a meaningless bowl game.

Christmas miracle for @49ers could be a number 1 draft pick. #Browns win! Browns win! Browns win!

So the @49ers can’t even accept the gift of a #1 draft pick?

Makes a certain amount of sense, neither Chip Kelly nor Colin Kaepernick is likely to be with the SF 49ers next year, so they might as well keep the team from getting the #1 draft pick on their way out.

Presumably Los Angeles is calling St. Louis asking if they want the Rams back.

So how did this @Rams team ever win four games? #SFvsLA

Cleveland #Browns win today. And the 2008 Detroit Lions have cracked open a case of generic beer.

Michael Floyd, who now says he has “learned” from his DUI, is active today for the Patriots. So what has Floyd learned? If you can play Bill Belichick doesn’t care what you do off the field?

#Vikings now thinking they had more fun during 3 hours stuck on plane that skidded off taxiway, than at Lambeau today against #Packers

A joint joke with Bill Littlejohn. “Joining Leonard Fournette and Christian McCaffrey on the sidelines to pass on his team’s bowl is North Carolina’s Elijah Hood.  Good grief, is this the college bowl season or the Pro Bowl?”

Okay, really? The guy who harrassed Ivanka Trump on a plane was wrong. But so now her supporters are slamming his husband’s book on Amazon as revenge. Can folks just grow the f*ck up?

Sidney Drell, 90, a long-time advisor to Presidents on nuclear weapons, has died. Let’s hope it wasn’t Trump’s tweets this week that killed him.

Donald Trump said today he is dissolving the Trump Foundation. I’m sure the fact that the foundation was under investigation by the NY State Attorney General’s office had nothing to do with it.

Plane misery

December 24, 2016

Minnesota Vikings had a fine flight today but then plane landed and slid off the taxiway. Perfect metaphor for the team’s season.

Tiger Woods playing golf today w/h Donald Trump. So even President-Elect couldn’t help Tiger make the cut to play on a weekend?

A Virgin America red-eye flight from San Francisco to Boston almost made a emergency landing when it was discovered one passenger had named their wi-fi hot spot “Samsung Galaxy Note 7_1097”
Someone, who didn’t have an actual Galaxy Note 7, finally fessed up after the captain made announcements, including “This isn’t a joke. We’re going to turn on the lights (it’s 11pm) and search everyone’s bag until we find it.”
Can you be put on the no-fly list for being stupid?

Grinch alert: Starting in January, British Airways will charge for all food and drink on short-haul flights in economy class. Passengers who hope to get around this by bringing their own instant coffee or tea bags will be out of luck, however, as the airline WILL charge for hot water in a cup.
Most people’s reaction “That’s absurd.” U.S. airlines’ reaction: “How do we do that?”.

Uh oh, the Airtrain connector from Newark Airport broke down this afternoon so many people couldn’t make their flights. Did someone connected with the airport piss off Chris Christie?

The Rockettes have reportedly been ordered to perform at Trump’s inaugural, and those who refuse will be fired. Makes a certain amount of sense – showcasing women who are being told what they MUST do with their bodies.

Now @realDonaldTrump is furious that his son Eric cannot have donors “pay to play” for his foundation. Does this even need a punchline?

Trump’s latest tweet. “Vladimir Putin said today about Hillary and Dems: “In my opinion, it is humiliating. One must be able to lose with dignity.” So true!”
So being dignified would be for Hillary to have said up front she might not have accepted the results of the election?

In Kentucky, Ken Ham, the founder of the Ark Encounter, a life-sized Noah’s Ark replica, lit it up in rainbow lights, and said “Sadly, people ignore what God intended the rainbow to represent,” which was His “covenant with Noah,” and not “freedom, love, pride or the LGBTQ movement,”
Chris Hartman, director of the Kentucky Fairness Campaign, decried the statement, but added “It makes the ark look incredibly gay.” #GodBlessAmerica

Well, damn, reports are that #CarrieFisher suffered a massive heart attack on a flight from London to LAX. May the force be with her.

One more comment on the Ivanka plane issue. Here’s my feeling, if someone is acting in a political capacity at a speech or fundraiser, then civil protest is reasonable. If someone is “off-duty,” then we should just all be nice.
Quite an old story but I once was a waitress at Stanford for a dinner that Casper Weinberger was attending. We were all vetted by Secret Service in advance. At the time I hated everything he was doing. But as a friend and I discussed, we were students but we were also professionals, and we treated him nicely. Funniest thing in retrospect, here there were half a dozen agents at the dinner, plus the vetting, but when I went around with coffee, Weinberger asked “could I have tea, if it’s not too much trouble.” Nice man. Horrible policies. But I did my job, and felt good about it.

Nothing to see here

December 23, 2016

Bill Belichick admitted today that the Patriots were unaware of how extreme Michael Floyd’s DUI was. But the New England coach didn’t seem too deflated about it.

Idaho beat Colorado State 61-50 in the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl. I am aware several stars have decided to forego bowl games, but did both teams’ defenses decide to stay home?

Ezekiel Elliott says he won’t jump in a Salvation Army kettle, after he was not fined for the last celebration – “I think I had my one get-out-of-jail-free card,I used it already.”
Is that really the best phrase to use for a football player who is still under investigation for domestic violence?

Manny Ramirez’s wife told TMZ that Manny, 44, wants to play professional baseball again. Can the SFGiants sign him and gift wrap him as a present to the Dodgers?

So tired of hearing that “without California Trump would have won the popular vote. And yeah, without California the  Tigers & Royals would each have one more World Series trophy, and the Rangers would have their first.  #SFGIants

On a positive note, tuned into the Spurs-Clippers game tonight, and while I’m not a mall jewelry store fan, saw a nice holiday “Love” commercial from Zales featuring two lovely brides. On TNT. And this commercial has apparently been out for a few weeks and has survived social media conservative outrage. #progress #wellplayed

Grayson Allen has been suspended indefinitely for “actions that do not meet the standards of Duke Basketball.” So during this time will Allen get help, or consider switching his talents to football?

The Beach Boys are reportedly considering playing Donald Trump’s inaugural. Considering all the discussion about popular vote, guessing one of their song choices won’t be “California Girls.”

New White House counselor Kellyanne Conway, asked if she will have trouble handling her job while being a mother of four. “I would say that I don’t play golf and I don’t have a mistress so, I have a lot of time that a lot of these other men don’t.”
Uh, so for all these years how has Trump done HIS job?

And Kellyanne Conway also indicates that Trump might not have a ban on Muslims per se, but for a ban on individuals from terrorist-prone countries. Uh, looking at Sandy Hook, Charleston and any number of mass shootings,  could that standard be used by other countries to keep Americans out?

Twitter’s stock keeps falling after their CTO and VP of Product both announced they would leave. One analyst says the company is ‘toast.” Maybe Trump will just buy the whole thing and use it instead of Press Conferences.

The US and Russia need more nuclear weapons like billionaires need a tax cut.

Sing a song?

December 21, 2016

Still no word on inaugural performers. But maybe Trump can get a chorus together to sing “Putin on the Ritz.”

Happiest person when #GraysonAllen gets to @NBA will have to be #DraymondGreen, because Green will no longer be officials’ public enemy #1.

Patriots coach Bill Belichick says the video of Michael Floyd’s DUI arrest won’t affect his status with the team. Well, yeah, by comparison, not like he shot anyone or anything….

When he fell asleep at a traffic light and was arrested in Scottsdale, Michael Floyd’s blood alcohol level was allegedly .217 The guy is 225 pounds… just how many drinks do you have to have to get to .217 at that weight?

Most passing yards in NFC, most TDs, 3rd highest QB ranking. Left out of the Pro Bowl. @DrewBrees @Saints   Can we blame Trump?

Although to be fair,  when the  NFL Pro Bowl players are announced. most fans will care far more about who got picked & snubbed than actual game.

Passengers were temporarily evacuated from three terminals at LAX today over “suspicious unattended bags” and the bomb squad was called.  But no explosives were found.   Guessing, however, someone’s Christmas presents ended up going to pieces.

The most popular Democrat in a recent poll by a large margin was Michelle Obama. 61% said she should run for office. Well except of course that one reason she is so popular is that Michelle is way too smart to run for office.

Bus to hell moment for the day. 70 people in Santa Fe became ill after a holiday party last week. Investigators believe it was contaminated food. And why it’s a bus to hell moment – they were employees of the New Mexico Health Department.

So @realDonaldTrump is sending out an angry tweet storm on his losing the popular vote. Wonder what he’s trying to distract us from today?

All these angry tweets from our President-elect. Can we only imagine what Trump would be tweeting if he LOST?

I get it, rules are rules. But the final tally had Hillary Clinton with almost a 3 million vote lead, and with more votes than any other losing presidential candidate in US history – 65.844.954 to Trump’s 62,979,879.
The question, if the electoral and popular numbers were reversed, would Trump and his supporters be so grudgingly accepting of the results?

Newt Gingrich says that Donald Trump now “just disclaims ‘drain the swamp’ He now says it was cute, but he doesn’t want to use it anymore.”
Right, especially since Trump is now filling the swamp with bigger richer whiter alligators.

So Trump’s new adviser overseeing regulatory affairs will be..billionaire Carl Icahn? While we’re worried about gators in the swamps, the foxes are running out of room in the hen house.

Trump picks Carl Icahn as a special adviser. So Icahn can do for the US Government what he did for TWA?

The gift that keeps on giving

December 20, 2016

#Starbucks has come up with a Fruitcake Frappuccino. So will it be shelf stable so it can be re-gifted for years?

#SF49ers & #Rams play on December 24. Wait a minute, aren’t Americans supposed to wait until Christmas day for a traditional turkey?

NCAA gave Rutgers football notice of 7 possible violations. Can they threaten to make Scarlet Knights bowl-ineligible with a straight face?

Journey has been selected to the Rock and Rock Hall of Fame. Good omen for 2017 SF Giants? #dontstopbelieving

Fire crews were called to the Palace of Auburn Hills this morning. Two-alarm blaze, unknown origin. Well, something’s was on fire and it’s sure not the Pistons.

The Arizona Cardinals released Michael Floyd after his DUI arrest, his 2nd, along with two other “alcohol-related Incidents” at Notre Dame. Reportedly it wasn’t just the arrest but the wide receiver’s lack of remorse.
Now Floyd’s been picked up by the New England Patriots and is heading to the playoffs. Yeah, that’ll teach him.

A video posted to FB by a fan appears to show a security guard at Qualcomm masturbating during while the Chargers-Raiders played last Sunday. Disturbing, yes But on the other hand at least someone from San Diego got some pleasure out of that game.

Some complain Christian McCaffery should play for Stanford in the Sun Bowl, that it should be about the game and not the future money. Right, except that Stanford by ranking should have been in the Holiday Bowl in sunny San Diego. But instead the Cardinal are in El Paso, where it could snow on Christmas, and be tough conditions, because the Holiday Bowl bypassed them in hopes of getting more fans, i.e. money, from WSU, #karmadoesntlovebowlgames

#LenaDunham just said “I still haven’t had an abortion. But I wish I had.”  Now she apologized and said it was a  “distasteful joke”.  Sigh.  Proof positive that no political party or persuasion has a monopoly on stupid.

If the Democratic party wants to look ahead, and we should, here’s an example of the kind of thing to stop: Yesterday, only two electors defected from Trump; four Democratic electors refused to vote for Clinton.

Ugh, many dead from an explosion fireworks market in Mexico City. This is a time when the U.S. is poised to give up even more of our civil liberties, not to mention spend more money. in fighting terrorism. But at the same time the incoming administration wants to eliminate more safety regulations as anti-business….
Yes, terrorism kills. So does carelessness. #whatcouldpossiblygowrong?

Ich bin Berliner

December 20, 2016

The picture is from 2 years and 6 days ago,  at a different Berlin Christmas market. But hey, if we stop traveling, the bad guys win.

berlin

Ugh. Too much death today. And then Trump tweets “Today there were terror attacks in Turkey, Switzerland and Germany – and it is only getting worse. The civilized world must change thinking!
Uh, in Switzerland, it was Muslim men that were attacked. And in Turkey it appears the motive was vengeance about Aleppo. #notthatsimple.

ESPN.com reports Clemson QB Deshaun Watson, 2nd in the Heisman voting, said today “I’m the best player in the country. That’s how I think. That’s how I feel. People have their own way of voting.”
Well, it’s probably a good thing for Watson that no one at Ohio State reads anything on the internet.

Christian McCaffrey says he will doesn’t want to risk his NFL career and will sit out the Sun Bowl. So guess outside of Stanford and UNC fans, that will still mean the game gets a few dozen national viewers.

But makes sense, McCaffery was smart enough to get into Stanford, he’s smart enough to know it’s not worth risking millions of dollars in potential future earnings over a meaningless bowl in El Paso.

FIFA has fined England, Scotland, Wales & Northern Ireland over wearing poppies on their armbands for Armistice Day, claiming that the flowers are now a “political” symbol. Even officials at the No Fun League are going WTF

After every Islamic terrorist act, some want to register Muslims, but after every U.S. mass shooting, same folks don’t want to register guns

Eric and Donald Jr. Trump are offering $500,000 donors to “sportsmens’ charities” a private reception with their father Donald, as well as a hunting trip with one of the sons. Hmm, can we crowdfund a donation for Dick Cheney?

You know @realDonaldTrump could just say “Merry Christmas” without trying to make a war out of it.

Another snow warning has been issued for Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea on the Big Island of Hawaii. So now only apparently would hell freeze over when Trump got elected, but heaven too.

Trump’s pick for Secretary of the Army, billionaire Florida Panthers owner Vincent Viola. Well, Viola did graduate from the USMA and served in both the 101st Airborne and the Army Reserves. And maybe since he owns an NHL team, Trump figures Viola also knows all about fighting?

Trump to announce his new Secretary of Veterans Affairs soon. Can I put money on a billionaire draft-dodger with no healthcare experience?

Brief detour from snark: Have to say, not that it really matters what I think but having the electors refuse to vote for Trump seemed like a really bad idea. I’m genuinely worried about him as President, but talk about a scary, slippery slope into complete anarchy.
Personally I also doubt he will “grow into” the office, but suppose we need to at least wait and see. Which doesn’t mean liberals rolling over. In one of the few times I will quote a Stanford rival school, ‘Fight on.”

A not-completely ill wind.

December 18, 2016

In 1989, Hurricane Hugo destroyed the only Olympic-sized pool in St. Croix, damaging the future gold medal dreams of one of the island’s top swimmers. But it ended up okay for Tim Duncan.

Coolest thing, not as a player how great #21 was, but as a teammate and man how much he is loved . “I got so much more from you guys, from my teammates than they can explain that they got from me.” -Tim Duncan

retirement

SF 49ers co-owner John York was asked today if the report of his son Jed being stripped of his CEO duties was false, he replied “Completely..” Which is great news, for the rest of the NFL.

San Francisco would at least like to thank the #SF49ers for not providing a real distraction from Christmas shopping this Sunday.

The Ravens’ Justin Tucker set a record by making his 10th field goal of the season of 50 yards or longer But to be fair shouldn’t some credit be given to the opportunities presented Tucker by Baltimore’s mediocre offense?

Now it ‘s the Washington University at St Louis men’s soccer team suspended for “degrading and sexually explicit comments” online against women. Now, I’m not that P.C., but wouldn’t you think coaches would start telling these idiots at least to keep their neanderthal comments off-line and in the locker room?

In Little Rock, a 3-yr-old boy was fatally shot when police say an angry driver fired at his grandmother’s car because she “wasn’t moving fast enough.”
If only the toddler had been armed.

RIP Rose Evansky, 94, who died last month. While others made more headlines, she came up with a simple idea in the 1980s, blow-dry hairstyling for women. (Remember those domed dryers?). #lifechanging

Zsa Zsa Gabor, 99, has passed away. Most Americans are shocked. Zsa Zsa Gabor was still alive?

For the younger generation going “Who?”, #ZsaZsaGabor was a Kardashian before there were Kardashians.

If there really were a “War on Christmas” you think all these stores would still have Christmas decorations up soon after Labor Day?

I know many of us are “dreaming of a White Christmas” but these Donald Trump thank-you rallies were not what we had in mind.

Trump is upset some are questioning legitimacy of the election when he himself spent much of campaign questioning legitimacy of the election.

So Trump hasn’t had a press conference since July 27, but hosted members of the press pool for an off-the-record party with lots of food and drink, and photo ops, at Mar A Lago in Florida.
And anyone defending this, imagine if Hillary Clinton had done the same thing?

Meanwhile, Skip Bayless was on FB live when he used his own official page to comment “Skip you are the man!!! Love the new show on FS1!!!”
Is this a shameless attempt to promote himself as a potential White House Press Secretary? #egosofafeather

#SoundofMusic one of my all-time favorites, well except that line ‘Lo & behold you’re someone’s wife, & you belong to him” #nobodysperfect

Cold day

December 17, 2016

Looking at US weather this weekend makes me wish not quite so many people would have said “Hell will freeze over before Trump is elected.”

Trump tweeted China’s seizure of U.S. research drone was #unpresidented. Actually #Unpresidented is what Dems would like to make Trump

A video of Oklahoma Joe Mixon hitting a woman in 2014 has been released. The running back is the top rusher on the team and a projected top draft pick. But guessing Mixon won’t get the Ray Rice treatment. Because while both apologized, Joe, 20, is still heading for the top of his game, and Rice was already on the downside.

#Minnesota players ended boycott & so the team will play in #HolidayBowl. Wonder what persuasion school used? Average Dec. temp in San Diego vs Minn?

Trump tweeted China’s seizure of U.S. research drone was #unpresidented. Actually #Unpresidented is what Dems would like to make Trump

China says they will return the U.S. Navy underwater drone it captured in the South China Sea. Just as soon as they figure out how to copy it and make the drone for 1/10 the price.

Vanity Fair says they sold a record 13,000 subscriptions the day after Trump said the magazine was “dead” after they slammed his restaurant.
In related news, dozens of U.S. newspapers made plans to send their snarkiest reporters to review Trump Grill.

In Corpus Christi, at least 4 people are sick probably because of exposure to contaminated water But hey, who needs the EPA going forward.

RIP Henry Heimlich. Sad, but he did make it to 96. So hope his friends and family aren’t too choked up about it.

Among many reasons to live on West Coast is ability with social media to know in advance whether @SNL is worth staying up for..

Many Americans voted against Hillary & Jeb because they were against political dynasties. Now w/ Trump’s kids we get dynasty in real time.

Depending on location, journalists average $24-70,000 yearly salary. Trump & most of Cabinet are millionaires & billionaires. So who’s the  elite here?

Come join the band…..

December 17, 2016

No DC area high school wants to march in Trump’s inaugural. But hey, Stanford band has been suspended & is available. #passthepopcorn

Watching “Love Actually,” one of my favorite Christmas movies, including Hugh Grant as the leader of Great Britain. But this year especially wishing that Billy Bob Thornton was the worst leader we Americans could send over in return..

The college football bowl season statts today, December 17. And if you are not an alum of one of the teams playing today, and you REALLY care, you just might have a problem.

Former NFL V.P of officiating Mike Peirera insists now that refs regularly get assistance and advice from replay officials via their wireless headsets, before any challenges might be issued. This would be a violation of league rules. The NFL is less than transparent and honest? I am shocked. Next thing Periera will allege is that there is gambling in Las Vegas.

Many Stanford fans were upset because the Holiday Bowl bypassed the higher rated Cardinal for Washington State, mostly because they expected more WSU fans to travel to the game. (Even though San Diego is an attractive destination and Stanford has never been.)
Now the bowl is facing a potential boycott by Minnesota players over the suspension of 10 teammates.
I suppose it would be wrong to enjoy this mess just a little

Here we go again. Princeton University has suspended its men’s swimming and diving team’s season after “vulgar and offensive” material was found on their electronic mailing list, specifically “misogynistic and racist” comments involving the women’s team.
This is the 3rd suspension for an Ivy League sports team in a month, following that of the Harvard Men’s soccer team and Columbia’s wrestling team.

I know the Ivy Leagues aren’t know for great athletes, but aren’t they supposed to be smart?

.

So can anyone tell me real difference between a business sending you an e-card & sending other ad spam? Yeah, me neither.

That moment when you shudder to hear as a now Northern Californian that the temperature is going to drop into the low 40s. And then you remember why you decided never to move back to the east coast.

Trump tweet this morning “Are we talking about the same cyberattack where it was revealed that head of the DNC illegally gave Hillary the questions to the debate?”
Leaving aside the veracity of the accusation, so if someone can hack into any emails and discover something potentially untoward, that’s okay then? Is Trump issuing a challenge to liberal hackers?

Arizona Sheriff Joe Arpaio announced yesterday in a press conference that a 5-year investigation “proved” that President Obama’s birth certificate is a fake & highlighted what they called “9 points of forgery” on the document, which focused on the angles of date stamps, typed letters and words.
What’s Arpaio trying to do, get an appointment in the Trump administration for making the President-elect look sane by comparison?

It’s not easy being (neon) green.

December 15, 2016

Turned on Thursday Night Football tonight and was having a Spencer Gifts 1970’s black light poster flashback.

Even Oregon Ducks are looking at these Seahawks uniforms tonight and thinking “WTF?”

LA Rams punter Johnny Hekker tweeted “Almost got denied my morning coffee by the woman working at the cafe because of my rams sweatshirt…loving the hate.”
Actually, that’s surprising. You’d think in Seattle, and every other NFL city these days, they’d be delighted to see the Rams. #EasyW

Cal announced they are firing their football defensive coordinator after the Bears allowed an average of 42.6 points per game, 127th out of 128 FBS teams
This move shocks many fans who didn’t realize Cal HAD an defensive coordinator.

Temperatures at Soldier Field for the Green Bay-Chicago game this Sunday are expected to be at or near 0 degrees Fahrenheit at kickoff.
Or as Packers fans and players say “positively balmy.”

After 1-3 inches of snow fell in Portland yesterday, cars have been abandoned all over the city. In Minneapolis and Chicago people are just giggling.

A Hawaii bank is absorbing a big loss after a $1 million check from the Hawaii Visitors and Convention Bureau, mailed to New York to pay for an ad campaign, was stolen and cashed in Arizona.
Okay, just one question, who the heck cashes a $1 million check without LOTS of identification? #cantfixstupid

Figured Vanity Fair must have really slammed Trump’s policies or appointments to get that his latest angry tweet trashing the magazine.. Wrong, all  they did give a scathing review to his restaurant in Trump Tower. calling it the “Worst Restaurant in America.” #whythereisnosatire

So all the @nytimes needs for a rapprochement with Trump is to give #TrumpGrill a glowing restaurant review?

Tiffany Trump is reportedly going to attend Harvard Law School. Feel just a bit sorry for her as some pretty high percentage of her classmates probably have ambitions to sue her father.

Donald Trump met with executives from many Silicon Valley companies Wednesday but didn’t include Twitter because the company is “too small.”
I get Trump’s ego, but was it really a good idea to pick a fight with the company who really can “delete your account?”

While we agonize over the November election down here in the U.S., up in Canada they have problems too: there’s a big political fight over whether the Super Bowl has to be shown with the much-hyped U.S. ads, or whether Canadian advertisers can replace them with less flashy local ads. No joke. #nojoke #kindlergentlerfirstworldproblems

And finally, RIP Craig Sager, one of the real good guys in this world.   Gregg Popovich’s pre-game comments below, in their entirety:

“I guess on a day like this, basketball has to take a back seat as we all think about somebody who was very unique, very special Whether you really knew Craig (Sager) or not, you got the feeling that he was a special person in a lot of different ways. And right now I just feel for his family.

“To talk about him being a professional or good at what he did is a tremendous understatement. All of us who knew him understood that fact, what he was all about as far as work was concerned, but he was a way better person than he was a worker, even though he was amazing in that regard. He loved people, he enjoyed pregame, during games, postgame — he loved all the people around it, and everybody felt that.

“The most amazing part of him is his courage. What he’s endured, and the fight that he’s put up, the courage that he’s displayed during this situation is beyond my comprehension. And if any of us can display half the courage he has to stay on this planet, to live every (day) as if it’s his last, we’d be well off. We all miss him very much.”

Numbers game.

December 14, 2016

Gregg Popovich has 1,109 career wins in the regular season. 1,001 of them were with Tim Duncan.

Despite announcing the wrong winner last year, Steve Harvey has been invited back to host the next Miss Universe pageant. Forgiveness? Or FOX figuring that viewers hoping for another flub will give them all-time high ratings?

Jim Brown is a legend but wonder why Donald Trump met with Ray Lewis. Hope it wasn’t for advice on how to get away with murder?

Lions CB Darius Slay, on the Pro Bowl being in Orlando instead of Hawaii “It’s really pointless.” Uh, has the Pro Bowl ever been anything but?

(Idea, what if being picked as a Pro Bowler just gets you two free tickets to Hawaii. Save the wear and tear and potential injuries Of course this would disappoint at least a dozen fans.).

WR Michael Floyd was arrested for DUI and failure to obey a police officer after he was found allegedly passed out in his running car early Monday morning on a Scottsdale street. Today the Cardinals released him. When will they ever learn – if you want to stay on a team and get arrested, you’d better be a superstar.

Lane Kiffin already has his first controversy as coach of FAU, by signing East Mississippi Community College QB De’Andre Johnson. Johnson was a top prospect who was dismissed from Florida State he was seen on video in a bar punching a woman.
So congratulations to all those who had December 14 in the pool

At San Francisco Intl Airport (SFO), a traffic management program is in effect, causing some arriving flights to be delayed an average of over 2 hours. Or as frequent fliers in and out of SFO call it “Wednesday.”

Reports are that at least 300 employees of Google and Twitter and other tech companies have signed a pledge to refuse to help Trump build a Muslim registry. Of course there’s another way out of this, have Yahoo or AOL volunteer to build the registry; then it just won’t work.

Conagra Brands, the company that makes Reddi-wip, said they may have a shortage this Christmas due to a fatal explosion at a Florida nitrous oxide plant this summer. The horror. This could mean not only no aerosol whipped cream this holiday, but no dregs of nitrous oxide in the can to help survive your relatives.

Good to see #Trump taking time between insults, celebrity pics & thank yous to tweet about tragedy that is #Aleppo. Oh, wait, never mind.

Trump is considering Carly Fiorina as Director of National Intelligence. Because after the report of Russian hacking Donald might want Carly to do to Intelligence employees what she did to those at HP?

Carly Fiorina in the debate after Donald Trump insulted her face. “I think women all over this country heard very clearly what Mr. Trump said.” Yeah, and it sounds like in the end Carly herself paid about as much attention to what he said as many women.

After meeting with Trump, #Kanye tweeted today #2024. Isn’t it a little premature to think of taking on President #CoryBooker?

BP announced it is moving headquarters from Houston to Denver. This following Exxon-Mobil moving its headquarters to the White House?

from Marc Ragovin “The NY Yankees have signed Reuben Tejeda to a minor league contract. He reportedly is head over heels with the move.”
