Flagged

November 30, 2016

Last year after Carolina beat Seattle and a Seahawks fan dangled a “12” flag near Cam Newton, the Panthers QB smiled, grabbed the flag and tossed it away. Now Richard Sherman is saying “I guess karma gets you” as it “doesn’t look like (Carolina) will be in the playoffs this year.”
Now, I’m a HUGE fan of mean bitch Karma, but my sense is that flag grabbing isn’t high on her list of the worst NFL sins.

Seeding in the @NBA playoffs is all about home-court advantage. The way the @spurs are playing, home court might not be an advantage.

In Prince Edward Island, Canada, Police in the town of Kensington have warned “those dumb enough to feel they can drink and drive,” that not only will they arrest you, “we will provide you with a bonus gift of playing the offices copy of Nickelback in the cruiser on the way to jail.”
The department thought about threatening to play Justin Bieber, but that might be a violation of the Geneva Convention.

11 stabbed by a #Somali at #OSU is cause to stop refugee program, but 10 bystanders shot in #NewOrleans isn’t cause for gun control? #WTF?

Cubans lined the streets and cheered for a four-day funeral procession throughout the country for Fidel Castro. Though to be fair hard to tell if they were cheering for their long-time leader’s life, or for his death.

US Weekly is reporting that “a source close to Kim and Kanye” said that “Kardashian was looking to take a break from her husband.”
Wow, if true, Trump will have to come up with some pretty incredible tweets to stay at the forefront of the headlines.

Michael ‘Jim’ Delligatti, 98, died this week. He was the McDonald’s franchisee who came up with the Big Mac in the 1960s.
Presumably Delligatti owed his long life to never eating his creation

The NYPD is looking for a man who snatched a pail containing $1.6 million worth of gold flakes off the open back of a Loomis truck on 48th Street. Leaving aside that police do not know his identity, have to wonder, who LEAVES $1.6 million in gold in the open back of a truck? #cantfixstupid

#SarahPalin is actually lobbying now to be appointed Secretary of Veterans Affairs. But haven’t vets suffered enough?

Barack Obama, on those dreaming of his wife following him. ” “Michelle will never run for office. She is as talented a person as I know. You can see the incredible resonance she has with the American people. But I joke that she’s too sensible to want to be in politics.”
All accurate except the “joke” part.

So now that the GOP controls the Presidency, Senate and House they will be able to repeal Obamacare and replace it with that great healthcare system for everyone that we had before…. Oh, wait, never mind.

As we await the latest crazy 3 am tweets, maybe our nation’s serious journalists should take a page from John McCain. “I’m not talking about Donald Trump. I didn’t before the election and I’m not doing so afterwards. I’m working on defending this nation as chairman of the Armed Services Committee, so you are wasting your time asking me about Donald Trump’s day-to-day comments or what his positions are.”

So, is it wrong to root for Trump to fail? Personally I will be pleasantly surprised if he can do good things with infrastructure, jobs and healthcare, and would (ok, I admit it, grudgingly) cheer him..
But as far as cutting our limited safety-nets, as far as taking away women’s and LGBT rights, as far as continuing to incite xenophobia, as far as making it possible for police to stop anyone on the street who looks foreign….. on these and other threats/promises, yes, I ABSOLUTELY will root for him to fail.

From Marc Ragovin   “In anticipation of moving to their new home next year, the Atlanta Braves have acquired 43-year old pitchers Bartolo Colon and 42-year old RA Dickey. What is the name of their new place? Jurrasic Park?”

Home not cooking?

November 30, 2016

The Spurs are 14-4 with all 4 losses at home. How long until #GreggPopovich demands San Antonio players stay at hotels for all home games?

ESPN reports all 6 NBA games today won by the team with the worse record. “The Elias Sports Bureau notes this is the 2nd day in NBA history. the first was in 1969, that that happened (minimum 6 games played in a day, at least 15 games into the season).” #IblameTrump

In men’s college basketball, Bryant freshman Ikenna Ndugba got the ball with 4 seconds to play and dribbled out the clock to preserve his team’s win against Brown. Only problem, Bryant was losing 91-90.
Who says college athletes don’t need to know math?

Ravens placekicker Justin Tucker says he would like to see a rule change where if you split the “uprights on a kickoff you get a point or you get rewarded for it in some way.”
Well, actually the Canadian Football League has given a point for a touchback for years….

#Oregon has fired football coach #MarkHelfrich. Well, former coach #ChipKelly might be available.

ESPN’s new NFL power rankings are out & #2 team behind Cowboys is the Raiders?    Forget Cubs & Trump’s victories, this is a true sign of apocalypse.

On Monday, an employee of a Austin bar filed a lawsuit against Johnny Manziel, The man accused Manziel of punching him and breaking his nose when he told the former QB he was not actually a  bartender and couldn’t make his drinks.
So congrats to all those who had Nov. 28 in the pool.

So was Elaine Chao chosen as Transportation Secretary in part to make sure Mitch McConnell never goes after Trump over his children and potential conflicts of interest?

(Chao is married to McConnell)

Todd Macaluso, former lawyer for Casey Anthony, was arrested last week for allegedly trying to fly 1,500 kilos of cocaine from Ecuador to Honduras. 1,500 kilos? Wow. And that still wasn’t as despicable as defending Casey Anthony.

#DanQuayle showed up at #TrumpTower, ostensibly to offer congratulations. Because Quayle thinks Trump will “Make America Grate Again?”

or maybe it’s just that Trump Tower has the best potatoes in the U.S.

What’s next with @realDonaldTrump’s auditions for Secretary of State. Trips to the fantasy suite? #whogetstherose?

So after railing against Hillary Clinton’s speeches to Goldman Sachs, Trump has now picked for Treasury Secretary, Steve Mnuchin a 17-year veteran of… Goldman Sachs. #draintheswampandputinbiggeralligators
#whythereisnosatire

From Trump today on Twitter: “Nobody should be allowed to burn the American flag – if they do, there must be consequences – perhaps loss of citizenship or year in jail!”
From the Boy Scout handbook: “A national flag that is worn beyond repair may be burned in a fire. The ceremony should be conducted with dignity and respect and the flag burned completely to ashes.”
#whythereisnomoresatire

Attn @realDonaldTrump, flag burning is protected free speech as per Supreme Court in 1989. In a majority opinion joined by Antonin Scalia.

So would Trump supporters like to name ONE Cabinet pick he has made who is a defender of the working class?

Leaving the lights on.

November 28, 2016

So this year it’s the “Motel 6 Cactus Bowl,” on Dec. 27 in Phoenix. Do the winners all get a free night at a Motel 6, and the losers get two nights?

The Big Ten reprimanded Jim Harbaugh and fined Michigan $10,000 after Harbaugh complained bitterly about the officiating Saturday. A small excerpt “Two penalties called all day [on Ohio State “Multiple holding penalties let go, multiple false starts…”
So wonder if Wolverine backers already have a Gofundme account set up to pay the fines?

Ohio State could make the College Football Playoff without winning their own division.   Would that make them an honorary member of the SEC?

A United flight from San Francisco to Tokyo had to return to the airport today following an engine failure after takeoff. No word about potential compensation for passengers, or about a future “engine” fee.

Hoping the attacker ends up  the only fatality on OSU campus today. But my immediate bus-to-hell thought “Dudes, you won the game.”

That and “anyone seen Harbaugh this morning?.” #morebustohell

Trump supporter NY Rep. Chris Collins today “”What do I know about Mitt Romney? I know that he’s a self-serving egomaniac who puts himself first, who has a chip on his shoulder, and thinks that he should be president of the United States.”
Does this even need a punchline?

Trump is threatening to “terminate” deal that Obama made with Cuba. Does he realize even his supporters like cigars and rum?

Apparently Twitter users are going after Ivanka Trump after she posted a picture of her youngest child, with the caption “I cannot believe Theodore is 8 months old today. Happy Birthday Little Teddy Bear.”
But come on, we all know the Trumps are so special they get birthdays every month. #onlythelittlepeoplejustgetonebirthday

The NY Times reports that Steve Bannon talked to Julia Jones, a former partner on a Reagan film project, about “genetic superiority,” and “the desirability of limiting the vote to property owners.”
Ah yes, building that bridge to the 18th century

Trump is naming Georgia Rep. and Obamacare critic Tom Price as Secretary of Health and Human Services. Price tweeted “House Republicans’ #BetterWay plan will protect the principles of health care: Accessibility, Affordability, Quality, Innovation, & Choices.”.
Okay, fine, but how come all these GOP critics never thought health care needed reforming until Dems actually passed the ACA?

Got to love this one forwarded to me by Roberta.

In addition to winning the 1967 Stanley Cup, the Maple Leafs won all subsequent Cups if you deduct the dozens of teams who won illegally

Payback?

November 28, 2016

Gregg Williams, who was the defensive coordinator for the New Orleans Saints responsible for “Bounty Gate,” now has that job for the Rams.

Not only did the Saints put up 49 points on the Rams today, but they scored one late TD on a flea flicker pass with a 21 point lead. But I’m sure payback from New Orleans coach Sean Payton had nothing to do with it.

The Pac 12 Championship might have better than average attendance. Could be 1st good matchup fans see in the 49ers’ Levis Stadium.

Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly said would “speak with” DL Jerry Tillery, who apparently stomped on the foot of one USC player, and kicked another in the helmet when he was down. Will Kelly tell Tillery he is “NFL ready?

In the third quarter of yesterday’s Michigan-Ohio State game, Jim Harbaugh got angry enough to throw his play card and headset onto the ground on the sideline. Officials gave him an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty. Jeez, for 15 yards Harbaugh might as well have thrown the stuff and hit someone. .

Got to love the airlines. United says it’s not possible to standby earlier when flight was delayed because of having a checked bag and bags must go with passengers.
Then land to an email message saying “Welcome to San Francisco! Your bag has arrived on an earlier flight. Please see a Baggage Service representative in Baggage Claim to pickup your bag.” #WTF?

Trump and Obama are apparently talking regularly. Makes sense from the President’s view. If the President-Elect will listen to anybody, he might as well listen to a voice of reason.

Forget the shock of Trump winning election, more unbelievable question – how did the SF 49ers ever beat anybody?

So now that @realDonaldTrump was elected President can’t he just order the IRS to stop his audit and then go ahead and release tax returns?

Trump tweeted today  “In addition to winning the Electoral College in a landslide, I won the popular vote if you deduct the millions of people who voted illegally.”   So it’s not enough that people are creating fake news, now the President-elect is quoting it.

Putin has given a Russian passport to U.S. action film star Steven Seagal, saying he hopes it’s “a sign of a gradual normalization of the relations between the countries.”
If Putin really wants to score points with Americans, maybe he can give Russian citizenship to the Kardashians?

No evidence “millions” voted illegally, but if @realDonaldTrump believes it wouldn’t he want massive recount to prove point & bigger win?.

If Trump really wants to reward someone who helped him win election, should give Cabinet post to Jack Dorsey, founder of @twitter

Kellyanne Conway says that Trump supporters are furious that he is considering Romney for Secretary of State after the personal attacks Mitt made about the Donald during the campaign.
Of course, on the other hand, if Trump doesn’t consider anyone who didn’t attack him, or who he didn’t attack, there are going to be a lot of open positions in his White House.

Apparently many of more than 1.5 million Floridians who signed up for the ACA are really counting on the law staying in place. Because they love the Affordable Care Act, it was Obamacare they couldn’t stand?

Anyone who’s never been uninsured in their life has no business complaining about the #ACA #Obamacare. That is all.

Amateur hour

November 26, 2016

Notre Dame ended season 4-8, and got cited for academic misconduct, so coach Brian Kelly’s job might be in jeopardy.
Hmm, could be a perfect fit for Jed York and SF 49ers. #winningwithclass

Louisville lost to Kentucky,  and dealt a serious blow to Lamar Jackson’s Heisman hopes.  The last time a Heisman candidate lost to Kentucky, it was Charlie Ward  while playing basketball for FSU.  (march, 1993)

That moment when as much as you hate #OhioState, you kind of don’t want #TylerDurbin to miss since it would mess him up for life. #MICHvsOSU

Okay, moment has passed.   How do you claim a playoff spot when you can’t win your conference?

No California team in the Pac 12 championship this year. Who knew the only really decent team in the state might turn out to be the Raiders?

=

The #SFGiants are reportedly talking to the #RedSox about trading for Pablo Sandoval. So how do you unburn Panda hats & bridges?

So @realDonaldTrump tweeted out at 6:08am “Fidel Castro is dead.” Not at 3:00am. See, now that he’s  been elected, Trump already slacking off

Canadian PM Justin Trudeau, had a tempered response to Castro’s death, calling him “controversial.” Ted Cruz angrily responded “Why do young socialists idolize totalitarian tyrants?”
And Trump is thinking “Ted’s saying “totalitarian tyrants like it’s a bad thing.”

Would have been interesting to see if #Trump would have met w/ #FidelCastro. Maybe not a communism fan but so “how’d you become a dictator?”

So which of your family members would YOU date if you weren’t related to them? #BadTopicsForHolidayParties

=

Trump called the recount effort “a scam.” Wait a minute, wasn’t he the one who was worried about the election being rigged?

NY Daily News headlne “Cops bust emotionally disturbed man who entered Trump Tower, claimed President-elect called him.”
“Time to go home now Mr. Giuliani.”

Too soon

November 25, 2016

So first today we lost Florence Henderson and now Fidel Castro?   Guess even Communist dictators have a hard time imagining life without Carol Brady.

The story of a lovely lady…. R.I.P Florence Henderson. There goes another piece of our childhoods.

Or maybe Castro couldn’t face the thought of Trump being the U.S. President who might attend his funeral?

Convenient of #FidelCastro to have died after Obama lifted some restrictions: Americans can now legally toast his memory with Cuban rum.

So yesterday Colin Kaepernick praised Fidel Castro and today the Cuban leader is dead. You mean that’s all it took

That moment when you realize #DakPrescott is interfering with your lifelong hatred of the #DallasCowboys

Instead of Anthony Bourdain’s “Parts Unknown” CNN in Boston last night apparently aired 30 minutes of porn. In related news, a record number of men asked their wives on what channel they could find the Food Network.

How American: a day of giving thanks for all we have, then a day to go out & buy a lot more stuff. #thanksgiving #blackfriday

What’s wrong with this headline? “Ageless actress Christina Applegate turns 45 years old.” Yeah, she’s positively ancient. #sarcasm

Robin Van Ert, who had an extramarital affair with Bo Ryan, when he was men’s basketball coach at Wisconsin, and then wrote the university that Ryan had misused funds during the affair, has filed a federal lawsuit.. She claims among other things that because Wisconsin released her name she has suffered “severe emotional and physical distress and illness, loss of privacy, harm to her reputation, loss of business and has incurred substantial damages and legal fees.”
RIght, so now with this lawsuit millions of people who have either forgotten or never heard about Van Ert and the affair in the first place, will now really remember her name.

That moment when you realize that with alternative being #RudyGiuliani that #MittRomney doesn’t seem so bad as a possible Secretary of State

Trump having hard time getting entertainers for inaugural. But hey, no problem #TedNugent & replays of #theApprentice. It will be HUGE.

So in 2017 expect @realDonaldTrump declare day after Thanksgiving to be “Orange Friday. And it will be HUGE, the best shopping day ever….

Okay whatever you think about our two major party candidates this Presidential election, this fact remains: All the hacking, all the released emails, all the fake news, whether it was done by a foreign government or just mostly foreign rogue hackers, was ALL in support of a single candidate. And that in and of itself should be very scary.

Holidaze

November 24, 2016

Happy Thanksgiving. Thankful to have so many wonderful friends and readers.  Even and especially if we disagree on some things – from trivial stuff like politics to important stuff like baseball.

But hey, aren’t we all a little nuts?

nuts

The pilgrims were a hardy lot. No football games or the prospect of Black Friday sales to keep them from falling into post Thanksgiving food comas.

If all of these companies were REALLY thankful for us on Thanksgiving they would take a one-day break from sending us junk email.

Next year will @realDonaldTrump order stores to close on #Thanksgiving so we can spend time w/ families and order gifts from his website?

New Yorkers are particularly thankful that Trump decided to spend #Thanksgiving in Florida. Thereby not making traffic any worse today.

“Whatever anyone says, I didn’t kiss Mommy. She wouldn’t have been my 1st choice. Nasty woman.” Santa Claus #TrumpaChristmasCarol

Apparently some folks were upset that Aretha Franklin sang a five-minute version of the national anthem in Detroit. Now, before the Super Bowl maybe, but really, who was in a hurry for a Vikings-Lions game to start?

Amateur hour.

November 23, 2016

The SF 49ers, embroiled in a financial battle over stadium management with Santa Clara, have now slammed the city’s “‘disturbing trend of frivolous actions”
Uh, doesn’t “disturbing trend of frivolous actions” basically sum up the 49ers’ recent coaching decisions and draft picks?

Jill Stein is raising money for a recount in MI, WI & PA. Of course if Stein had really cared about the election she could have just not run.

RIP #Ralphbranca. So somewhere in heaven is #BobbyThomson smiling while he takes batting practice? #Dodgers #Giants

San Antonio @Spurs won again by 5, tonight against Hornets. Will #Popovich just send out a video of last night’s rant and say “ditto?”

Wendell Carter, a power forward considered the top uncommitted recruit for 2017, says he is going to Duke. These are tough decisions for these young men, deciding where to spend several months of their lives.

At this point aren’t all the warnings about the Samsung One Note 7 smart phones just a suggestion for potential terrorists on how to catch a plane on fire?

Trump has decided “the law’s totally on my side, the president can’t have a conflict of interest.” So while the Donald accused Hillary Clinton of “pay-to-play” with her foundation, he’s going to take care of things by getting richer and richer while IN the White House.

In California, as of today an estimated 1,797,333 unprocessed ballots remained in California from the Nov. 8 election. Wow. If only we had some creative high-tech talent in the state to work on a faster solution.

Carnival pulling the plug on their new “Fathom” volunteer-work oriented cruise line, which was designed for an “under-served market of consumers who want to have a positive impact on people’s lives”
Turns out the positive impact most cruise passengers really want on vacation is more about tipping waiters who bring them beer and umbrella drinks

Well, to be fair #BenCarson is probably as qualified to be Secretary of HUD as Donald Trump is to be President of the United States.

In March, Donald Trump tweeted “The people of South Carolina are embarrassed by Nikki Haley!” Today he appointed Haley Ambassador to the UN. Does this mean the Donald has changed his mind. Or is he showing us what he thinks of the UN?

#BetsyDeVos for Education secretary. Guess it makes #Trump sense, put someone in charge who doesn’t believe in public schools….

The NEA teacher’s union estimates that 1/3 of their members voted for Trump. And now the Donald has put a voucher advocate who hates public schools as head of the Dept. of Education.
Mean bitch karma is clearly bipartisan.

Over the line.

November 23, 2016

Because of academic misconduct, the NCAA ruled Notre Dame now must vacate wins from their 2012 and 2013 football seasons. So can they also finally give Stanford’s Stepfan Taylor that touchdown?

(for non-Stanford fans, in 2012 the Fighting Irish were unbeaten, and the Cardinal, down 7 late in the game in 2012, was near the goal line, about to get either a game-tying TD – or with a 2-point conversion even a winning TD.   Taylor twice was ruled not to have run the bal into the end zone, although replays indicated he did at least once. The Notre Dame refs did not agree.)

A now viral video shows Dallas QB Dak Prescott throwing a Gatorade cup away, missing the trash can, and then going to pick it up to put it in the can. Jeez, what kind of a Cowboy is Prescott if he couldn’t even get arrested for littering.

So #Cubs win #WorldSeries, #Trump wins #WhiteHouse and now #Raiders are getting favorable calls from refs. Truly signs of the apocalypse

Detroit LB DeAndre Levy said his proudest moment in college was when he accidentally ran into Joe Paterno and broke his leg. Some former Penn State players responded “We find the recent statement by DeAndre Levy about Coach Paterno appalling, along with the silence that has accompanied it.”
Uh, is it really a good idea to complain in the same sentence about silence and Paterno?

Coach Gregg Popovich, after San Antonio held off the Mavs tonight 96-91. “That was a pathetic performance on the part of the Spurs. You know, they (Dallas) had some guys out, we had some guys out, but they had a lot more out than we did. I thought we showed a lack of humility, a lack of respect for the opponent, a very pathetic performance at both ends of the court, both in execution and in grunt, in fiber, in desire. It was an awful performance. Oh, and they deserved to win the basketball game, I forgot to say that.”
#Popovich2020

#SNL producer Lorne Michaels received a Medal of Honor from @BarackObama. Wonder if Trump will issue executive order overturning the medal.

Tuesday was the 53rd anniversary of #JFK‘s assassination. So wonder if for gesture of GOP unity if @realDonaldTrump will pardon Ted Cruz’s father?

So now that the Trump Foundation has admitted to using money illegally will Trump  pardon himself?

In a meeting with NY Times reporters today, Trump apparently conceded Tuesday there is “some connectivity” between human activity and climate change and said he would keep an “open mind” to international climate agreements.
Now, to my mind this latest is not a bad thing…. but at some point will the President-Elect give us a list of what statements he made during the campaign he actually believes?

A new Quinnipiac University poll found that only 35% of voters think Trump should keep his personal Twitter account, while 59% of said Donald Trump he should shut it down. Rather amazing stats considering that a significant fraction of that 35% must be comedy writers.

Worst and worstest?

November 21, 2016

The NFL played a game tonight in Mexico City. And Mexico is thinking “Wait, Trump is accusing US of sending criminals across the border?”

SF 49ers coach Chip Kelly, asked if he received any assurance from Jed York on his job next year. “No, we haven’t had any conversations about that at all. About anybody’s job security.”
Of course, in Kelly’s favor, who else might want to take on this mess?

U.S. Soccer just fired national team manager Jurgen Klinsmann. So congrats to all those who had Nov. 21 in the pool.

The Washington Redskins keep on winning. I blame Obama.

But is it just me or does the @NFL have a LOT of lousy football teams?

At Chicago’s O’Hare airport, hundreds of workers have announced a strike for Nov 29. They are waiting until Tuesday theoretically to miss the holiday weekend.
But okay, two days after Thanksgiving weekend? Should be lots of people still stuck at O’Hare.

LB Jerrell Freeman today became the second Chicago player suspended in a week for violating the NFL’s policy on PEDs.
The Bears are 2-8. Maybe this should be a warning to others, not only will PEDs get you suspended, they apparently don’t work.

Though easy material keeps on coming, I was really looking forward to tough task post-election of writing pantsuits jokes.

Imagine if Michelle Obama decided to stay in Chicago not to move girls from school in 2009. Would have been uproar on wasting taxpayer $$$.

So just guessing Green Day is not performing at Trump’s inaugural.

Mark the date, November 20, 2016.  Donald Trump tweeted  “I have always had a good relationship with Chuck Schumer. He is far smarter than Harry R and has the ability to get things done. Good news!”

So shall we start a pool on the date Trump decides Schumer is an idiot and/or crooked?

If Donald Trump really wants to keep illegal immigrants from getting jobs he doesn’t need a wall; just make it felony resulting in jail-time to hire them.

From Bill Littlejohn:  ““President Obama inviting the Chicago Cubs to the White House before he leaves office reminds one of a similar situation the last time the Cubs won the World Series, Pharaoh invited the Cubs for a visit just before the Ten Plagues of Egypt.”

Well they got the 9 part right this week.

November 20, 2016

Losses.

When they do the post-mortem on this 49ers season, it may be that the biggest mistake the #SF49ers made this year was beating the #Rams & losing that #1 pick

Anyone but me think the NFL is now the  “almost No Fun teams to watch League”?

Ohio State remains #2 this week because Michigan State tried and missed a two-point conversion?    Yeah, these rankings make sense.

From the NY Times: For all those dismissing the left coast and our popular vote – in September 42% of new US jobs were created in California.

So if @realDonaldTrump’s win was a victory for forgotten working class in this country, who’s filling those inaugural hotel rooms in DC at 1,000 a night?

While Donald Trump keeps up the angry tweets, Mike Pence said he “wasn’t offended” by the remarks from the cast of Hamilton. and the boos were “what freedom sounds like.” So is Pence trying to reassure the country he’ll be a fine President when Trump resigns or gets impeached?

Just an aside on the whole Hamilton thing, while post-performance speeches are not an every play occurrence, I’ve been to plenty of plays where there’s a charity request afterwards, and more than one where actors have talked specifically and passionately about AIDS. But maybe Trump has never actually gone to a Broadway or London show before?

Reports are that Trump doesn’t want to give up his Android phone when he becomes President because he uses it so frequently, including for his Twitter account.
So wonder if he’ll direct his staff to set up a private email server.

Axed.

November 19, 2016

Stanford’s Christian McCaffrey against Cal defense- what happens when irresistible force meets 11 movable objects.

South Carolina State put in walk-on RB Joe Thomas Sr., 55, whose son Joe Jr. plays for the Green Bay Packers, for four plays on Saturday. Uh oh, nobody tell Brett Favre.

#1 Alabama today at home to take on the powerhouse Chattanooga. But hey, only in the SEC can you take on a school most people don’t realize has a football team, and still probably get points from voters based on perceived strength of schedule.

RGIII will be back at practice next week for Cleveland. As the Browns continue on their path as the Bermuda Triangle for quarterbacks.

Ray Lewis dissed Ravens QB Joe Flacco: “Gifted? Absolutely. Passionate about what he do? I’ve never seen that,”

Well, at least Lewis didn’t say Flacco doesn’t have a killer instinct.

A whale was sighted today in the Hudson. Must.Not.Make.Chris.Christie.Jokes

But you know it’s getting bad with Trump’s picks when you start feeling a little wistful that he dumped Chris Christie.

If @HillaryClinton really could have gotten millions of illegals to vote don’t you think she’d have gotten 100,000 of them in swing states?

Steve Bannon apparently boasted this week “I am Thomas Cromwell in the court of the Tudors.” Uh, yeah, okay… just guessing maybe someone didn’t see all the episodes or read past 1539 in the history books…

So @NYTimes & cast of @Hamilton both upset Trump. As Pres. will the Donald issue executive order that all foreign leaders need to be nice to him?

So is #BoycottHamilton really about #Trump supporters upset cast talked directly to #MikePence. Or are they just hoping for cheaper tickets?

So maybe #MikePence didn’t realize that the actors in #Hamilton included gays & minorities instead of straight white men in makeup?

If #MikePence was offended by words used by cast of @Hamilton after show can we get him tickets to @BookofMormon?

If #Trump really wants focus on #MakeAmericaGreat would be nice to see some cabinet picks focused less on making America hate.

=

Donald Trump headed to his New Jersey golf club and in so doing shut down the Lincoln Tunnel. Who said he never learned anything from Chris Christie?

Donald Trump’s choice for CIA director, Mike Pompeo has said Edward Snowden should face the death penalty. Have to wonder, didn’t Snowden ever read spy novels about what happens to informants when they are no longer useful?

Trump took credit for keeping a Kentucky Ford plant from moving to Mexico, although Ford had already decided not to move it to Mexico.
Next up, the Donald will tell us about how he is going to make the days start getting longer in late December.

John McCain just said “I don’t give a damn what the president of the United States wants to do or anybody else wants to do. We will not waterboard. We will not do it.” Is Senator McCain getting old enough that he forgot who won the election?

Trump advisor Steve Bannon in an interview with the Hollywood Reporter. “Dick Cheney. Darth Vader. Satan. That’s power. It only helps us when they (liberals) get it wrong. When they’re blind to who we are and what we’re doing,”
Yeah, I can see how religious conservatives went for this potential administration.

What the Hamilton cast actually said: “We, sir, we are the diverse America who are alarmed and anxious that your new administration will not protect us, our planet, our children, our parents. “We truly hope this show has inspired you to uphold our American values and work on behalf of all of us. All of us.”
And of course Trump responded with a defense of their polite free speech. “The cast of Hamilton was very rude last night to a very good man, Mike Pence. Apologize!”
Would that the Donald were so quick to denounce the KKK etc.

God’s squad?

November 17, 2016

The Indiana Supreme Court ruled this week that Notre Dame’s police department doesn’t have to release crime reports to ESPN. Well, yes, because there is no higher authority than Touchdown Jesus.

No prize for it but @Saints would win the @NFL award this year for keeping the most games interesting until the last minute.

ESPN reports that prosecutors cut a deal with Johnny Manziel to conditionally dismiss his DV case involving a former girlfriend. Hmm, do prosecutors think Manziel is still a NFL QB?

Not a Johnny #Manziel fan, but he WAS the QB the last time the #Browns actually won a game. #creditwherecreditisdue

On a positive note – LeBron James is donating $2.5 million for a Muhammad Ali exhibit at the Smithsonian. The guy does make it harder and harder to dislike him.

To be fair to United Airlines, which has been the butt of jokes over its new fares, these “basic economy” fares will be the lowest fares. Other coach fares will still have the so-called perks travelers are used to having, for now.
But I am sure travelers will have no problem when they are looking for discounts in discerning the difference. #sarcasm

Obama said today he was “cautiously optimistic” that Donald Trump would grow into the office of the Presidency; there is “something about the solemn responsibilities” that “forces you to focus and demands seriousness. And if you;re not serious about the job, you probably wont be there very long.”
Somewhere Dick Cheney is chuckling.

Apparently if you buy a “Make America Great Again” hat at Trump Tower the cashier asks if you are a U.S. citizen, because the proceeds benefit the Trump campaign. Shouldn’t they be asking for ID? Don’t want foreigners affecting the election. #sarcasm

Unreal. With the hashtag #Audithevote have seen on Twitter people who think 1-3 million illegal immigrants voted for Hillary Hmm, if immigrants are all that smart and motivated both to vote and escape any actual detection no wonder they are stealing American jobs.

And if Hillary could get millions of fake votes wouldn’t you think she could get 100,000 or so in Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Florida.

Trump advisor Carl Higbie, talking to Megyn Kelly, on a Muslim immigrant registry :We did it during World War II with Japanese, which you know, call it what you will, may be wrong,
“You know better than to suggest that That’s the kind of stuff that gets people scared, Carl.”
“I’m just saying there is precedent for it,”.
“You can’t be citing Japanese internment camps for anything the President-elect is going to do.”
Megyn Kelly, moderate voice of reason. #WTF?

As #Trump continues to rail against @NYTimes, what’s end game? To delegitimize them to the point there’s only fake internet news & Trump TV?

Early voting?

November 17, 2016

After Justin Verlander barely lost the AL Cy Young vote to Rick Porcello, Bill Chastain, who covers the Rays for MLB.com, admitted he sent in his ballot a week early. (Verlander allowed one run in 14.2 innings his last two starts.)
So really, what is it about voting in Florida?

So wonder how much $$$ television could get for #KateUpton vs #GiseleBundchen on pay-per-view? #StandByYourMan

Wake Forest says documents of new plays were found in the stadium after their 44-12 football loss against Louisville last week and they are investigating a possible breach. There is of course the question, why would Louisville bother?

Tony Romo in a prepared statement said of Dak Prescott “He’s earned the right to be our quarterback. As hard as that is for me to say.” Although no doubt Romo still hopes to come back to disappoint Cowboys fans in the postseason.

United’s new basic economy class allows no preassigned seats, no frequent flier miles, no changes and no carry-on bags. So what’s their next step, no seat cushions?

Now, this new basic economy class will be lower than regular economy class fares. But I am sure NO consumers will book the cheapest fare without seeing what it really means…. #sarcasm

A new Taco Bell in Las Vegas features a frozen slushie bar with alcohol and a VIP lounge. Do guests in the VIP lounge get tacos filled with real meat?

13 years ago today Arnold Schwarzenegger was sworn in as Governor of California. And all our anxieties at the time now seem so quaint.

So just wondering, has @realDonaldTrump discussed with anyone his plans to put “TRUMP” in large gold letters on the White House?

Obama yesterday “It’s important for us to let him make his decisions. The American people will judge over the course of the next couple of years whether they like what they see.”
Damn I am going to miss this President.

Ivanka Trump sent out a media blast about how to buy the $10,000 bracelet she wore on “60 Minutes.” Can only imagine what kind of marketing opportunities she and the Trump family will find in the inaugural.

Now @realDonaldTrump may choose #TedCruz as Attorney General. Would this be shameless play for bipartisan congratulations in getting Cruz out of Senate?

Trump continuing to purge Chris Christie’s associates from team. Hope the Donald doesn’t have plans soon to take a bridge in or out of NJ

All kinds of speculation on Trump’s cabinet picks. No doubt the Donald is lining up sponsors so he can tell us “after the break.”

That moment when CHINA is lecturing the President-elect of the United States about climate change….

Well, we don’t know yet if @realDonaldTrump will be tough on our country’s enemy but we know he will be tough on the @nytimes.

Trump is now saying that anyone being vetted for the administration must resign as a lobbyist, and if they serve when they leave they will be banned from being a lobbyist for five years. (Obama has a two-year rule.)
Of course, it depends on the definition of what lobbyist is.

From TC  “Steve Bannon is in the White House thanks to Donald. Saved Uncle Sam a few dollars. They won’t have to repaint it for another 4 years as it’s now Whiter than it’s ever been!”

Costa rica?

November 15, 2016

Ok, regarding this #MakeAmericaGreat again stuff. Did @realDonaldTrump not realize we have a men’s soccer team?

Don’t look now, but the Lakers are respectable again. So is it Luke Walton coaching or Kobe Bryant leaving?

ESPN headline  “The CFP race is setting up for an unpredictable and likely controversial finish.”  In other words, water is wet.

Lots of Big 10 teams in the top rankings now.   Add another  conference where teams can beat up on each other but still rank higher than Pac 12 teams who do the same thing.

Columbia University has at least temporarily stopped its mens’ wrestling team from competing during an investigation of “lewd tweets.”
Once again, bad enough to make the comments, criminal stupidity to put them on the record in tweets. Even Ivy Leagues apparently #cantfixstupid

Apparently 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick, 29, has NEVER registered to vote. And he thinks Hillary Clinton is an imperfect leader….

For election should we really blame #AlGore? If he hadn’t invented internet Hillary’s emails & Trump on Twitter wouldn’t have happened.

Maybe we shouldn’t be surprised that a America who thinks you can find true love on reality show also thinks you can find president on one.

Democrats need to remember, it’s as important to keep fighting forward when we’re winning as to fight back when we lose.

Wait, I can’t just fire everyone in Congress I don’t like? #PresidentTrumps1stTantrum

Has anyone thought that maybe putting #SteveBannon in the White House is to make #Trump look statesmanlike by comparison?

So has anyone told Rudy Giuliani that if he becomes Secretary of State he can’t count on FBI friends to bail him out?

New sore winner prize to @RealDonaldTrump: if no electoral college “I’d have campaigned in N.Y. FL & CA, & won even bigger & more easily”

Twitter says it is cracking down on hate speech. Just in time to keep deranged Tweeters from affecting the US election. Oh wait, never mind.

USA doesn’t have “Leader of the Opposition” like UK does, but Democrats need one now to inspire w/ positive message. I nominate @CoryBooker

Be careful what you wish for

November 15, 2016

If Trump is going to deport immigrants who commit any sort of crimes, does this mean MLB, NFL, NHL and NBA really get chaperones for all their foreign born players. Because assume minor drug crimes, speeding tickets and DUIs count.

Tampa Bay Bucs WR Mike Evans sat during the national anthem to protest Trump’s election “I’m not big on politics or anything like that, but I told myself, ‘If this happens, America is not right right now.’ I said this a long time ago — when he [Donald Trump] ran, I thought it was a joke. The joke continues.”
Good that he feels the right to exercise his free speech, but just maybe Evans might have been more effective had he vocalized his feelings BEFORE people voted?

Chicago Bears WR Alshon Jeffery the latest to be suspended for violating NFL PED policy. He says he took a “recommended supplement” to battle inflammation, and it contained an ingredient on the league’s banned substance list.
Waiting for Goodell to say he’ll cut a game off the suspension of the first guy who owns up and says “Yeah, I was trying to get an edge and got caught.”

Apparent chaos and endless queues at London Heathrow Terminal 5 this last Sunday when British Airways had an “IT issue early this morning” which “was quickly resolved.” The airline added “We are sorry for the delay to our customers’ journeys.”
Right, but now try to explain to BA if an IT or indeed any issue results in you being delayed and missing a flight.

#SteveHarvey ending his talk show. Many Americans were hoping he’d tell us the election was just another Miss Universe results flub.

So now Trump says, hey, if Roe vs. Wade is overturned women can just go to another state for an abortion. Sure, I’m sure private jets are standing by. Let them eat cake with pickles and ice cream?

Way too young. RIP #GwenIfill,,61. She was secretly in hospice. where one can hope she died happily unaware of election results.

So it’s bad enough that Steve #Bannon is a white nationalist and an anti-Semite, but he’s also a veteran of Goldman Sachs #swampwhatswamp?

And now leaving snark aside, temporarily, for my fellow unhappy moderate and liberal friends:
Voter restriction laws – ID rules, fewer polling places, shortened early voting hours, etc, definitely cost the Democrats in this election. One thing that isn’t getting talked about is how all those things happened – Republican governors and state legislators. (Not coincidental that Ohio, Wisconsin, Michigan and Florida are governed by Republicans.)
So, if you want to work on change before the next election, start paying attention to local and state races. Now. The voting rights you save may be your own, or at least your party’s.

Songs for you.

November 14, 2016

Thinking #KateMcKinnon just became odds-on favorite to win an Emmy this year. #hallelujah @nbcsnl

RIP Leon Russell   Writer of two of my favorite songs, this one less well known.  Long ago, and oh so far away…..

While Dallas RB Ezekiel Elliott has one of the NFL’s top-selling jerseys, ESPN reports the league is continuing to investigate him over an alleged DV incident. So wonder when they’ll finish the investigation? The day after the Cowboys finish their postseason?

So if @Pac12 season ended tomorrow the championship game would be between #Colorado & #WSU. Just like everyone predicted. @ESPN

Sure hope those who attacked @BarackObama for spending time on golf courses will do same when @realDonaldTrump spends time at his golf clubs

So any way to get everyone who is protesting the Trump election victory to sign a pledge to spend as much time on GOTV for the next election as they do on the streets in 2016?

Some who didn’t vote Clinton because they didn’t think she’d do what she said, voted Trump because they don’t think he’ll do what he said.

So Trump says gay marriage is settled because of the Supreme Court but abortion isn’t? Has someone informed him you don’t get to pick and choose?

Re reports Trump had no idea what he was getting into & wants counsel from @BarackObama, wonder if he’d consider Obama as chief of staff?

Donald Trump, when Lesley Stahl on “60 Minutes” told him Muslims and Latinos are being harassed after his election “I am so sorry to hear that. And I say, ‘Stop it.’ If it — if it helps, I will say this, and I will say right to the cameras: ‘Stop it.'”
In other words, “Do as I say, not as I do.

Meanwhile, Kellyanne Conway, Trump’s campaign manager, said on Fox News that Harry Reid should be “”very careful” about criticizing the President-elect.
Conway indicated she is considering filing a lawsuit against Reid, and is “calling for responsibility and maturity and decency.”
And she said it with a straight face

Colin Kaepernick “You know, I think it would be hypocritical of me to vote. I said from the beginning I was against oppression, I was against the system of oppression. I’m not going to show support for that system. And to me, the oppressor isn’t going to allow you to vote your way out of your oppression.”
So after the revolution who’s going to be buying football tickets? #SMH

And then there was one number one?

November 13, 2016

Five of the top 10 teams lost.  Including 3 undefeated.

USC beat Washington, Pittsburgh beat Clemson. A great weekend for all those underprivileged SEC teams who never get a chance at the College Football Playoffs.

Now #Michigan has lost, following #Clemson and #Washington. 4 days after election. Did we switch to an alternate universe & no one told us?

Iowa’s visiting football locker room has been painted pink since 1979, at the behest of then coach Hayden Fry, as he thought it would give his team a psychological advantage. Yesterday before the game, Michigan temporarily redecorated it in maize and blue.
Maybe they should have used less energy on decoration and more on preparation?

It’s early but go figure… the Spurs with their amazing home winning streak last year are 2-3 at home. And 5-0 on the road.

So was there any reason to add Maryland and Rutgers to the Big Ten other than to provide in-conference cupcakes for the rest of the conference?

Atlanta has signed both R.A. Dickey and Bartolo Colon to contracts for 2017. Well, since they can’t get Hank Aaron to play and draw fans into their new stadium, the Braves instead went for pitchers who pitched against him?

In Scotland, an art historian says that a painting of the Virgin Mary bought for $25 back in 1899 as a decent copy of a Raphael painting now turns out likely to be a real Raphael. And across the world wonder how many auction house appraisers are bracing for an onslaught from peoples’ garages and attacks.

Oops- from Facebook today “A mistake has been fixed Recently, you may have incorrectly seen a message about memorialization on a Facebook profile. This was a mistake and the message was shown on the wrong profiles. We’re very sorry for the error and have fixed it.’

(I got the memorialization mistake on my page too… Nope, not dead yet.)
Glitches happen. But maybe better when they don’t happen on a week when people were saying they’ll kill themselves if Trump got elected….

As USA wonders how smart Trump really is, give man his due, w/ #MikePence as VP, it’s a lot less likely for a woman to want to shoot him.

Sauce from the gander? The Turkish government has just warned Turkish citizens in the United States or considering traveling to the US to “be careful due to protests” following the election of Donald Trump.

2000 was 16 years ago. While many of us not-so-old farts remember what happened with all those 3rd party votes for Ralph Nader, thinking that’s ancient history and might have been irrelevant to millennial voters.
And of course there’s that “those who cannot remember the past” thing…

Snark aside, here’s my longest post in some time. It’s going to be interesting as this Trump transition continues. Of course not all his supporters are “deplorables,” and it is clear that many people were just angry at the status quo.
But even when President Obama was elected, while I supported him strongly, and still do, I had a nervous feeling after the initial euphoria.
So many people thought Obama would fix all their problems. As now so many people think Trump will fix all their problems. And there’s no way all those people ever were, or are going to be happy with reality.
What happens then? And this time, since part of the message, theater or not, was blaming others – minorities, immigrants etc. -for problems, what’s going to happen with that anger? Trump may be able to pivot away from the “Lock her up, build that wall” rhetoric, and from the hate speech, but what will he do with the people who believed it?
As the old Chinese curse goes, “May you live in interesting times.”

Crossing borders

November 11, 2016

We’ll be back to more sports soon, I  promise.

#KendrysMorales signing w/ #Bluejays. Now long until other #MLB teams complain Trump’s election gave #Toronto free agent unfair advantage?

Happy Veterans’ Day. While we honor vets, let’s hope President-elect will weigh decision to put those serving into combat as if they were his own children

For change from election rumination, and #SpringTraining is still 90+ days away, watched #Pitch last night. Might be a new guilty pleasure

Open notes to all protesters this week: 1 Destruction is not protest. 2. Vow that you will never miss a vote going forward. #Election2016

R.I.P Robert Vaughn. Or should we say he just said U.N.C.L.E.

So did Melania come home from her White House meeting saying “Donald, when they go low, we go high”? #itsastart

“Love the fact that the small groups of protesters last night have passion for our great country. We will all come together and be proud!”

Well, one good thing about Trump, at least our country won’t have to worry about the stress of his wife also running for President some day.

Outspoken, idiosyncratic, able to inspire, successful in a field outside sports.  #Popovich2020

That old cliche, “Democrats fall in love, Republicans fall in line….” I’m as upset by the election as anyone, and I am not talking about independents, or those who legitimately wanted Trump. That was their choice.
But the fact remains, most in the GOP mainstream decried Trump, and Republican voters still got out, in many cases holding their noses, and voted for him. Whereas looking at the turnout numbers, a lot of Democrats, including liberal Democrats, decided Hillary wasn’t good enough and didn’t bother to vote. They have forfeited bitching rights. IMHO

Mabel Ball, 108, a Cubs fan who was born the last year the team won the World Series, has died.   Well, heck, had they just blown that game 7 lead she might have lived a few more years.

Drained?

November 11, 2016

So about when will Donald Trump realize that it is now HIS alligators and his swamp?

Have to think George W. Bush is smiling just a bit. Decent chance many will no longer think he’s worst US President In recent memory

Melania Trump and Michelle Obama apparently had a nice meeting in the White House today. Assume Melania asked Michelle for names of her favorite florist, chef, restaurants, speechwriter….

If #Trump is really going to start deporting immigrants how will Melania get her nails done?

Well, at least Thursday night Americans could take a break & have the biggest thing that sucks on TV be the #Browns. #CLEvsBAL

And early in the game, the Browns were actually ahead.  Until they reverted to form.  There alas went the 49ers best chance at a #1 draft pick.

NY Giants WR Victor Cruz, asked about Donald Trump post-election “My mom told me one time that if I don’t have anything nice to say, I shouldn’t say anything at all. So I’m gonna stick to that one.”
#notsodumbjock

Alabama football coach Nick Saban claimed today he had no idea there was a Presidential election Tuesday. “We’re focused on other things here”. Sigh. Pretty sure those other things don’t include education.

Your non-election Florida item for the afternoon: According to police affidavits, FIU senior TE Jonnu Smith’s girlfriend was upset about him not paying enough attention to her, so she poured boiling water on him. Smith is now out for the season with multiple burns. Oh, and she’s pregnant with their child. And you thought YOUR parents were embarrassing.

Rudy Giuliani on plans to “lock her up” with Hillary Clinton “I think that somebody should review that very carefully, as to how bad is that evidence. And if it isn’t as bad as some of the exaggerators think it is, then maybe the best thing to do is forget about it and move on.”
“Some of the exaggerators?” And Rudy said it with a straight face.

The Obamacare federal exchange had more than 100,000 signups yesterday, their largest day of the year. Lovely, so the threat of fines doesn’t spur people to action, but the threat of a Trump presidency does.

Waiting to see Trump announce simple new health plan that is much cheaper than Obamacare – “You get well without a doctor or you die”

So far Donald Trump’s transition team is heavy on Heritage Foundation types, K street lobbyists and GOP insiders. So was “drain the swamp” simply to get easier access to some of the bottom feeders there?

Going to be interesting to see if Donald Trump has any women in his administration. One problem, leaving misogyny aside, is any woman attractive enough to be “his first choice” might well not want to get within groping distance.

Wondering with all these ambitious legislative plans if #GOP has forgotten about that little 60 vote rule in Senate they loved so much.

Someone gave the Donald his Twitter account back    “Just had a very open and successful presidential election. Now professional protesters, incited by the media, are protesting. Very unfair!”

Such a gracious winner.

Apparently some anti-Trump protests are blocking traffic in the SF Bay Area. (Interstate 80). While I’m as upset about this election as anyone, making people late for work, childcare pickup, etc, etc, is a really good way to turn off anyone even a little bit moderate.

Many of these Trump protesters are young, some too young to vote. (Although I sure hope those who could, did.) But thinking about it, I can understand how this election hit the younger generation especially hard.
They have grown up with concepts we middle-aged and old farts never did: global warming, the idea of racial equality, anti-bullying and sexual assault messages, openly LGBT friends, taco trucks on the corner…. And with a soft-spoken African-American president.
It’s not just that we’ve elected a Republican, it’s that we’ve elected a man who at times has gone against all these people and things, and more. That is very very scary.
