As of Aug 17, top 6 teams in each league are so far ahead that only 1 NL team (Reds) & 3 AL teams (Royals, Guardians, Rangers) have even 10% chance of being wild cards.

Admittedly there are times I have found Gavin Newsom irritating in the extreme. But some of the traits that have driven me crazy over the years are so perfect for this moment.

Meanwhile, just outside DC, while so many genuflect, Mary Chapin Carpenter at Wolf Trap has changed her old lyric from wonderful “Stones in the Road” about children in the late 60s selling out as adults.

From “we doctor the receipt” to “And we don’t bow to kings.” Never liked her more.

But remember, every story written or broadcast about the absurdity of the National Guard and increased ICE action in Washington DC is a story not written or broadcast about the Epstein files.

What matters most

Much of the Western World turned against Trump today after his Oval Office tantrum against Zelnskyy. And Trump’s focus tonight on Truth Social?

He’s gonna pardon Pete Rose. (no joke) You cannot make this sh*t up.

I miss the days when being an “ugly American” traveler just meant you spoke too loudly and wore socks with sandals.

–

Even with Vladimir Putin visiting the White House, Joe Biden wouldn’t have lowered himself to have a public tantrum in the Oval Office. And he sure as heck wouldn’t have left a couple hours later to play golf all weekend.

–

Pretty amazing that in about five weeks Trump has managed to make himself perhaps the #1 most hated leader in the world. So this is America First?


How much did Donald Trump give Marco Rubio for his soul?

Meanwhile, Donald Trump fundraising email just now. “WILL YOU MAKE A PERSONAL SACRIFICE TO HELP ME REACH MY FUNDRAISING GOAL?” He wants $20.25 “personal sacrifice.” Why, that’s almost enough to buy a dozen eggs.

Forget Canada becoming the 51st state. The US is becoming Russia’s 22nd republic.

Either Trump is lying about Putin not planning to invade other countries after Ukraine. In which case he’s too dishonest to be President. Or DonOld really believes Putin won’t invade other countries after Ukraine. In which case he’s too stupid to be President.

I get that it’s scary. I get that Republicans have been threatened with primaries and probably worse. But they should look to the Russia that Trump wants the USA to be. Sooner or later, many Russians who ally with Putin for power still end up falling out of windows.

And Amy Klobuchar’s response today was pitch perfect.

“Answer to Vance:

Zelenskyy has thanked our country over and over again both privately and publicly. And our country thanks HIM and the Ukrainian patriots who have stood up to a dictator, buried their own & stopped Putin from marching right into the rest of Europe. Shame on you.”

We need more strong women leaders. Fewer petulant man boys.

Just how bad are the Chicago White Sox?

Not just 3-18 bad, but they’ve allowed 129 runs while scoring just 50. No team except the Atlanta Braves (133) has scored more runs than the White Sox have allowed.

Don’t look now, but the SF Giants are one game below .500.

Why is it so shocking how old Donald Trump looks in court? His public appearances have been carefully scripted, made for TV, short appearances at rallies, on TV, or at his resorts. Ask any woman of a certain age, easy to look younger for short-term photo-op. Not all day.

Trump and Putin did not want aid to Ukraine. Congress just passed aid to Ukraine. Is the orange chokehold loosening?

Tommy Tuberville today ranting GOP in House has sold out by voting to send aid to Ukraine. And claiming Senate should be voting on border legislation. Which he and Donald helped scuttle. Tubby is so orange & awful, does he really think Trump might pick him as a running mate?

Yes, New York City hotels are expensive. But is it time to start talking about sequestering the Trump jury?

Meanwhile, tuition at Columbia University over $66,000 Wonder how many student protesters who shut down university have tuition paid by wealthy parents? And how many of those parents are fine with kids’ actions because they think it will help Trump get re-elected & ensure their tax cuts?


Thinking students protesting & attacking President Biden over not helping Palestians & Gaza enough should listen to Republicans like Rick Scott. Scott & other GOP accuse Democrats of being anti-Israel & pro-Hamas. They demand ALL aid to Gaza should stop. Why not protest THEM?

So as Donald complains again that the courtroom is freezing. Isn’t another sign of dementia losing the ability to do simple things like put on a sweater?

And yes, he’s not the first to say it, in January 2023 Amy Klobuchar’s statement: “We’re not backing down or giving up and we won’t settle for a reallity where our daughters have fewer rights than their mothers and grandmothers.“

But Joe’s the President, a Catholic at that, and if we just vote in November he’ll sign the bill to codify Roe V. Wade into law.

What’s left of the Pac-12 and commissioner George Kliavkoff have “mutually agreed to part ways” the league announced Friday.

In less than 3 years with Kliavkoff as commissioner, USC, UCLA, Washington and Oregon joined the Big 10, Cal and Stanford joined the ACC; and Utah, Colorado, Arizona and Arizona State joined the Big 12.

For all of us who have ever thought we were bad at OUR jobs.

On a lighter note: ESPN reports Raiders QB Jimmy Garoppolo will be suspended for first 2 games of 2024 NFL regular season for violating league’s policy on performance-enhancing substances. If we needed more proof that PEDs often don’t work.

Joe Manchin has announced he is not running for President. Am not fan of Senator Manchin, but as I’ve said modestly defending him in past, he’s red state Dem who often votes right way in the Senate & he could be much worse. Lately, as with Dean Phillips, we’ve seen much worse.

Not completely a shock but so sad and outrageous to see that Putin finally murdered Navalny. So who on Trump’s staff convinced him not to crow about it on Truth Social.

Meanwhile over on Pravda aka Fox News “Biden blasts House for 2-week ‘vacation’ despite facing criticism for his frequent beach trips.” President Biden travels to his beach home regularly where he is constantly available & works much of time. GOP House cut & ran.

Was Navalny’s murder on the morning of Judge Engoron’s expected ruling a reminder to Putin’s puppet that Vladimir owns him.

So how long will it take for Trump to grift $354 million from his followers?

Judge’s ruling against Donald Trump said Ivanka Trump had “inconsistent recall” in her testimony. So does that mean Ivanka is a prematurely elderly woman with a poor memory?

On serious note, if you want to honor Alexei Navalny guessing he and his family would prefer a donation to your favorite Democratic member of US Congress running for re-election. (or running in a close swing district against a Republican opponent. Because watching GOP in action lately seems like best hope for democracy is to keep the Senate and retake the House.
