Are you ready for some not football?

February 5, 2024

Top ESPN headline “NFC clinches back-to-back Pro Bowl Games wins with clutch fourth-and-goal stop.”

And if you seriously knew that or cared about the game, you might need a hobby.

As we start a week of stories about suites at the Super Bowl costing over a million dollars, your reminder that Republicans think billionaires still need more tax cuts.

The Big Ten and SEC conferences announced they have formed a joint advisory group of university presidents, chancellors and athletic directors to “address the significant challenges facing college athletics” and how to improve the student-athlete experience.

Translation: How can we make it all just about us and our “student-athletes” and make the other conference grovel for scraps?

Believe that both Netanyahu & Hamas are evil. But as protesters demanding cease-fire disrupt & shut down many Dem events, why aren’t they going after GOP?

Mike Johnson “House won’t rush to pass Senate border-foreign aid deal but will take up stand-alone bill for aid to Israel.”

Why does it matter Dean Phillips stays in race, since he has no chance? Because national media LOVES to put mic in front of this mediocre Minnesota rich man to bash Biden.

Whereas plenty of other good Democrats would gladly use that time to tell reporters about Biden’s accomplishments.

Hey JD Vance. Remember this? “I do solemnly swear that I will support & defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign & domestic; that I will bear true faith & allegiance to the same.”

How many younger people are watching the Grammys, hearing the category “Record of the Year,” and asking “what’s a record?”

Don’t always watch the Grammys as there are so many acts I’ve never heard of and the show makes me feel old. Fortunately tonight was an exception. Trevor Noah AND that Tracy Chapman / Luke Combs duet right up front made it worth tuning in. Not to mention Joni Mitchell.

Mike Johnson on Meet the Press attacked Biden administration for “projecting weakness on world stage.” What about weakness of no longer supporting Ukraine?

And weakness of taking back the promises to Afghans who helped Americans.

And weakness holding up military appointments for politics.

Clean up your own House, MAGA Mike

We already knew Marianne Williamson’s a narcissist who loves attention.

Dean Phillips at least pretended to be serious politician, albeit not particularly effective. He’s under 2% in S. Carolina. What will it take for Phillips to learn – Dems are not at ALL into him?

Scarlett O’Hara in the end on Ashley Wilkes “I loved something I made up, I made a pretty suit of clothes and fell in love with it.” This is what the national media is doing with Nikki Haley.

Nikki Haley got a nice puff piece moment on SNL, but the Bear’s Ayo Edeberi won the cold open: “I was just curious, what would you say was the main cause of the Civil War, um, and do you think it starts with an ‘s’ and ends with a ‘lavery?’ ”

Hey SNL, if you had to give Nikki Haley a spot, why not do same for Democratic politicians. Amy Klobuchar can be seriously funny. Pete Buttigieg has great comic timing as well. Heck, invite Amy & Pete on together. Enough people remember 2020 primaries it would be must-see TV.

Maybe this time…

SF Giants keep trending on social media, especially the platform formerly known as Twitter.

And like Charlie Brown with the football, we SF Giants fans keep hoping that eventually it will be because of a big star joining the team instead of Farhan picking up more no-name players and trading others.

Not a joke. The Japanese Embassy in the USA actually put out this statement.

Lowest ticket prices dropping but still well over $10,000 a pair for the Super Bowl… and you don’t even get to see the commercials.

And the award for pearl clutching today goes to Fox News with this headline: “Potty mouth POTUS. Biden allegedly assailed Trump using profanity behind closed doors.” Yeah, Donald himself is such a model of respectful Presidential language.

WTF CNN? Figured the incredibly good jobs report would be their top website headline.

Nope. It’s “Why the strong economy isn’t helping Biden’s public image.”

353,000 new jobs in January! And it all started with firing one man… and replacing him with Joe Biden.

Listening to some GOP saying USA should’ve attacked Iran instead of Syria & Iraq after 3 Americans were killed. Don’t claim to know how military decided on strikes But how many of these chicken-hawks are volunteering themselves or their constituents if USA escalates into a war?

Senator James Lankford is Republican leader of a really important bipartisan Ukraine aid/border bill.

If only there was a way for God to send a sign that we should ignore Trump and pay attention to the Senator from Oklahoma…. #earthquake

The odds are odd.

February 2, 2024

The Pro Bowl on Sunday has devolved into some skill events and flag football games.

And yes, you can bet on them.

But if you know what those events are, and/or have made betting plans, you just might have a gambling problem.

As a number of big name free-agents remain unsigned, I’m so old I remember when we talked about pitchers and catchers reporting, we knew basically which team’s they’d be reporting to

The Dow on Thursday added 369.54 points, or 0.97% to close at 38,519.84. A new record.

This wasn’t a headline with most major national media.

But they found time to cover polls, and GOP chaos, and why “fill-in-the-blank” is a problem for Biden

Nikki Haley says “This is not personal for me. I don’t have issues with Donald Trump.” Uh she professes to care about democracy, leaving aside fact Nikki is a woman and daughter of immigrants. Can someone ask Haley why DOESN’T she have issues with Donald Trump?

Calling Donald Trump a sick F*ck actually seems like a more accurate demonstration of mental competence than “person woman man camera tv.”

While 150 Democrats is trending on social media and GOP is trying to stir up outrage, your reminder, President George W. Bush had a DUI, and VP Dick Cheney had two DUIs.

(Their proposed law makes any non-citizen deportable for a DUI conviction or even charge.)

GOP House new proposed law makes someone convicted of even or charged with DUI not only deportable but inadmissable from USA. So if other countries say someone convicted or charged with crime is inadmissable, gonna make it real hard for Trump if re-elected to go to most summits.

Tom Cotton went to Harvard and served in US Military. Pretty sure he knows that Singapore, one of the most capitalist countries in the world, is not China. But he’s hoping GOP voters don’t.

Travel agents know weird trivia. For example, air distance between Singapore & Shanghai is 2359 miles, further than from Los Angeles to Washington DC.( Singapore Beijing is 400 miles further.) Practically right next door. In case Tom Cotton supporters needed a geography lesson.

Interesting little sidebar on yesterday’s Senate Judiciary Committee hearing with the biggest social media companies. No executive from Trump’s Truth Social was included. Not because they behave better. But because they don’t matter. #Irrelevant

Keeping score

February 1, 2024

Now at 3,424 career points, Caitlin Clark will set her sights on the NCAA’s all-time scoring record of 3,527, held by Washington’s Kelsey Plum.

One of the coolest things. While Kelsey Plum may not be a household name (she now plays for the Las Vegas Aces) These days thinking most sports fans, men and women know who Caitlin Clark is.

So how many Scaramucci’s did Alina Habba last?

Two things we know.

1. Trump said GOP Senators who vote for the border deal would be making a ‘terrible mistake.”

2. Trump has no idea what’s in the BIPARTISAN border deal.

Put this (accurate) Washington Post headline question on the things I did not have on my batsh*t bingo card. “Can Lankford overcome the right?” James Lankford is one of the most conservative members of Congress.

Speaker Johnson today suggested that no immigration deal will be acceptable to him unless it completely eliminates illegal immigration — something that will never happen.

Want to end this madness? Vote Blue in November. As my late great stepmother said “We’re not perfect, but they’re nuts.

QAnon had a fundraiser for former gubernatorial candidate and current US Senate candidate Kari Lark.

Sorry, you can’t be a little bit pregnant.

And you can’t be a little bit QAnon.

Arizona, remember this when Lake tries to pretend in November that she’s semi- moderate.

As rightwing media attack what they call the idolization of Taylor Swift, Stephen Colbert responds “Yeah, stop worshipping false idols and buy yourself a piece of Donald Trump’s old suit.”

It’s now all about pulling away the football all the time, Who else thinks that if President Biden did decide to deal with the border by executive action as GOP is now suggesting, that Republicans would immediately try to impeach him for overreach?

Fascinating Senate Judiciary hearing today on protecting children online. Amazing number of GOP Senators (not all, Tom Cotton still being a jerk) actually talking reasonably w/out usual nonstop Biden bashing. We have bipartisan agreement on issue. Time to get some bills passed.

Amy Klobuchar: “When door blew off Boeing flight nobody questioned decision to ground 700 planes. Why aren’t we taking same sort of decisive action on social media? We know kids are getting hooked on fentanyl, seeing dangerous content on eating disorders, committing suicide over revenge porn.”

She’s right. and no one died as a result of the scary Boeing incident. A lot of kids have died from online fentanyl, from eating disorders, and as she said, suicide.
