Heading into the break

July 14, 2024

The All-Star Break.

(With about 114 days left untl the November elections political people are not likely to get ANY breaks )

Just like the SF Giants drew it up. Who had “walkout triple with cutoff man throwing the ball into the dugout” on their batsh*t baseball bingo card?

Meanwhile, the Los Angeles Dodgers are 48-2 when leading after 8 in 2024.

They were 48-0 on Saturday am.

Detroit Tigers on Saturday scored 5 runs in bottom of 9th against Los Angeles Dodgers to put the game into extra innings. And Tigers walked it off 11-9 in the 10th.

And then the Dodgers blew a 3-2 lead Sunday in the ninth as the Tigers walked it off 4-3 in the 9th Sunday.

Have to wonder…. if there had been an assassination attempt that wounded President Biden, would GOP leaders be both expressing sympathy and telling their base to turn down the temperature?

Something I don’t get – reports are that rallygoers spotted shooter on the roof of a manufacturing plant only 130 yards from the stage where Trump was speaking. Uh, isn’t that supposed to be the Secret Service’s job?

So tired of defeatism & now narrative yesterday’s shooting helps Trump. Sure, it riles up MAGA base. But if Americans are tired of increasing vitriol & talk of arrests, deportation, retribution, etc, the nice guy saying “we are the UNITED states of America” looks better & better.

Meanwhile in Texas, Greg Abbott loves to brag about Texas having few regulations for businesses. How’s that working out for them with Centerpoint Energy.

Half a million Houston-area residents are going into their 7th day in 100 degree temperatures with no power.

“When he leaves the teleprompter he’s unhinged. And an unhinged president is an unsafe president.”

Another of those Democratic attacks earlier this year on Donald Trump?

Nope, Nikki Haley. February 2024

As someone who’s worried about people getting killed over attacks on judges, election workers, opposing politicians etc, glad to see Trump say he plans to “dial it down” at RNC. As someone who’s been watching Donald for years, do we want to guess how long “dial it down will last?

Thought of her last night, and the quote I remember from being a 10 year old – from the day before she died.

Violence is never the answer. VOTING is the answer.

No sour grapes

Hoping Shohei Ohtani and his new backup band of All-Stars bring as many World Championships to the Dodgers as he and Mike Trout brought to the Angels.

So now that Los Angeles Dodgers have signed Shohei Ohtani for $700 million will they offer fans an installment plan to purchase beer and Dodger Dogs?

While this NFL season has a lot of mediocre football teams, the NFC South is in a class of their own – a three team tie for first place. At 6-7. Someone has to win, right?

As a Saints fan I have gotten used to some pretty ugly games this year, but the Vikings and Raiders may just have clinched “Ugliest game of the year” award, a 3-0 win by Minnesota on a late 4th quarter field goal.

If after regulation the teams were still tied 0-0 would it have gone to penalty kicks?

Today Bill Belichick and the New England Patriots were officially eliminated from this season’s NFL playoffs.

No punchline, I just like writing that.

Fox News headline “Democrat Sheila Jackson Lee suffers landslide defeat after a profanity-laced tirade on staff.” Then “Texas lawmaker John Whitmire tops Sheila Jackson Lee in runoff election for Houston’s next mayor” What the headline doesn’t say. Whitmire is ALSO a Democrat.

Sen. J.D. Vance (R-Moscow) said today United States needs to accept Ukraine will likely need to “cede some territory” to Russia to end war. And that it’s “prepostrous that Putin would attack a NATO country.” What’s next, Vance will proclaim “Peace in our time?”

Even the GOP is up in arms after Casey DeSantis asked out-of-state residents to come vote (illegally) for Ron DeSantis in Iowa caucuses. Silly Casey. If you’re a Republican who doesn’t live in a state, you can’t vote there, you can only run in that state for US Senate.

Didn’t it occur to Casey DeSantis that if it were possible for out of state residents to vote illegally in Iowa caucuses Trump’s team would have already thought of it?

Former President Donald Trump just said that he will no longer testify on Monday in his civil trial as previously planned. Did someone just tell him that if he testifies he can be cross-examined?

Again, most people don’t agree with friends, family members or spouses on everything, nor do we expect perfection from people we are close to. So what’s with some of this “Biden isn’t solving ‘fill-in-the-blank” single issue I have with him, so I’ll stay home or vote 3rd party?”-

A brave young woman in Kentucky who was raped by her stepfather appeared in an ad for Andy Beshear this November. Kate Cox, the poor mother who has a non-viable pregnancy with a wanted child in Texas has been through enough already, but can’t help hoping she now wants to do an ad for Democrats in 2024.

Something GOP doesn’t want you to know. If Texas mother Kate Cox is forced to go through with her non-viable pregnancy & the fetus survives for a few days, or in best case a few months, Republicans also want to cut Medicaid & other assistance to mothers and children.

Desperation…

So at this point Detroit automakers say they will do anything for a bailout….  Anything except actually making cars Americans want to buy.

Bill Clinton said this week that he would “stay out of Hillary’s way.”  Isn’t that what he’s been trying to do for most of their marriage?

Protesting a bit too much?

The New York Giants issued a 425 word statement denying that they tried to cover up Plaxico Burress accidentally shooting himself.   425 words?   The Gettysburg Address was only 272!

One line from the statement  – “No one from the Giants had any involvement with any decision by the hospital concerning its reporting requirements relating to gunshot wounds,” said Pat Hanlon, vice president of communications.    No comment.

The whole incident generates a  potential followup to the question “How do pro athletes get so many DUI’s when they could easily afford personal drivers?”   As in,  “If you are a real NFL star isn’t someone in your posse supposed to be carrying the gun for you?”

Quite a night in New York.  Rockefeller Center lit up their Christmas tree, and then the Cleveland Cavaliers lit up the Knicks.   (Final score  – Cavaliers 118, Knicks 82)

The Washington Redskins are clinging to playoff hopes after a disappointing month has left them 7-5.  On the brighter side, they may end up with more wins than the Wizards.

Thursday night’s NFL matchup features the 4-8 San Diego Chargers against the 3-9 Oakland Raiders.  Was this game sponsored by America’s malls?  Because it just might make most men in America throw up their hands and go Christmas shopping.

The San Francisco Giants will experiment with yield management and market pricing next year, by holding out 2,000 seats where the price will fluctuate as game day approaches, and according to supply and demand.  Thus unused seats could end up deeply discounted.

The Los Angeles Dodgers are studying the idea.  Their modification might be to sell seats twice, since they have so many unused after the seventh inning.
